Questions from Pinner
Can I fit a heat pump in Pinner without planning permission?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Central Pinner sits inside a conservation area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Pinner, usually Harrow council).
Do I need permission to put air conditioning in my flat in Pinner?
Often, yes, but the lease and the freeholder normally have a say. We look at where the outdoor unit could go, such as a balcony, flat roof or rear wall, and write it up for the freeholder or agent.
Does the grant cover air-to-air heat pumps?
The air-to-air grant is £2,500, and only some homes qualify. It must replace fossil-fuel heating and meet the full heating demand of a home with an MCS certified installer.
Will you make a mess?
Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets before work begins, and the area is kept tidy throughout. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.
Is Pinner in your area?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of the South East, and that includes Pinner.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
Can I do any of the installation myself?
The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That’s a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.
How we handle air source heat pumps in Pinner
Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. This is HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, which applies to homes rather than businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. The work covers hot water cylinders, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-water heat pumps, and people most often call us about radiators that may be too small for a heat pump and ageing boilers that will need replacing.
In a flat in Pinner, the lease and the freeholder usually decide where a heat pump can go. The planning rules for flats are stricter than for houses, and we check before designing.
If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We will tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

What happens on the day
Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. So on the day, you don’t need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. The more we can see beforehand, the smoother the visit to Pinner will be.
- It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.
How to prepare
- Clear a path to the units and the space around them
- Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand

How we price air source heat pumps
Your quote is based on your property. We consider:
- One-off work versus a regular service cycle
- Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
- The brand, model and parts involved
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is looked at first, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.
Before you get in touch
You don’t need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:
- The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go
- Any previous service or F-Gas records
- Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
Here’s what helps us quote: the address and the type of property, photos of the rooms or units, the brand and model of anything already fitted and anything you’ve noticed, such as an error code or a noise. Then phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Owner checks or an engineer?
Keep a note of anything odd: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
What air conditioning won’t do
We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:
- Tax advice on your own circumstances
- Planning approval where permitted development doesn’t apply
- Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler
If you are not sure, just ring 07833 053749 and we will give you a straight answer.

Heat pumps in Pinner: local notes
About 43% of homes across Pinner and its surrounding area were built between the wars, according to VOA council tax data, and about 61% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder. In London, outside space and the rules for flats often decide which kind of heat pump suits.
Older homes near Christian Science Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Headstone Manor lies about 1.5 miles east. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

A customer’s words
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
