Air source heat pumps for Hareplain

About our air source heat pumps in Hareplain

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than most boilers, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. The survey shows which rooms are fine and which need changes, and the quote sets it out. If you are dealing with deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home and plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump, we can sort it out.

If your home in or near Hareplain is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

What happens on the day

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. The work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. A few photos help us make the most of a visit to Hareplain.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

How to prepare

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

There’s one grant per property, and you cannot get a grant to replace a low-carbon system. Hybrids are excluded.

Radiators and underfloor heating

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators may need to be larger so we check them against each room’s heat loss.

About 75% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs. The installer applies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and we are MCS certified.

Questions from Hareplain

Is Hareplain within the area you cover?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Hareplain?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. A conservation area takes in the middle of Hareplain. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Hareplain, normally Tunbridge Wells council).

What accreditations do you have?

We hold F-Gas company certification, which the law requires for any business working on refrigerant. We are also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.

Am I eligible for a heat pump grant?

Not every home qualifies, so we check. There’s one grant per property, you cannot get one to replace a low-carbon system, and hybrids are excluded, among other rules.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, typically whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. It’s worth checking before you book, and we are happy to show ours.

Is there VAT on a heat pump?

For homes, 0% until 31 March 2027, under HMRC Notice 708/6, then 5%. With air-to-air, HMRC’s view depends on the product, so we confirm the VAT on the quote.

After we have gone

Looking after the system is mostly common sense. A few tips:

  • Ask about the grant before you commit
  • Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover
  • Keep to regular servicing

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. You might see steam or hear the unit change note, and that is normal.

Leave space around the outdoor unit. It needs good airflow to collect heat from outside, so keep it clear all year.

What air source heat pumps can’t fix

In fairness, some problems need a different answer:

  • Any gas work on the existing boiler
  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
  • Tax advice on your own circumstances

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Radiator systems
  • Hot water cylinders
