What air conditioning won’t do

Air source heat pumps can’t fix everything, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t put right:

  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation

Air source heat pumps in Halton

Every installation starts with a heat loss survey. It shows how much heat each room needs on a cold day, so the heat pump and the radiators or indoor units can be sized properly. Sizing by rule of thumb isn’t good enough. Typical jobs include working out where a cylinder could go and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life, across radiator systems, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-air heat pumps.

In a place like Halton, some homes are listed, and permitted development does not cover listed buildings, so consent comes first.

Warranty periods vary by brand and by product. For example, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and its longer extensions apply to its air-to-water units only. For any other brand, we explain the manufacturer’s terms on your quote.

System by system

Air-to-air heat pumps

Air-to-air heat pumps warm rooms through indoor units and can cool them in summer. They don’t heat hot water, so that has to come from elsewhere.

Radiators and underfloor heating

Underfloor heating works well with heat pumps because it uses lower temperatures, and we can connect to it where it’s already in.

Homes in Halton and heat pumps

VOA council tax data date about 42% of homes in and around Halton to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and about 69% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder. Roughly a third of a mile or less from central Halton, you reach the Halton Conservation Area. Historic England lists about 7 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Halton, including Halton House (grade II*). Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with Buckinghamshire council, normally the planning authority here before the heat pump design is finished.

Historic houses such as Cholesbury Manor House, about 3.9 miles south-east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in. Older homes near Church of St Michael and All Angels may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

After we’ve gone

So the system stays in good health:

  • Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
  • Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork
  • Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing

Handover includes the controls and how to get the best from a heat pump. Steady running suits a heat pump better than switching on and off so we set the controls up with you.

Don’t cover radiators with furniture or heavy curtains so the heat can get into the room.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Halton

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Halton?

Halton is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Do you cover smaller places like Halton?

Yes. Halton is within the area we cover across London and the South East. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

It can, for some brands. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we’ll explain them and stick to the interval they set.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. It’s worth checking before booking, and we are happy to show ours.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is a legal requirement, and it also matters for the manufacturer’s warranty. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.

Is a heat pump permitted development?

In England, many air source heat pumps on houses can be permitted development provided the conditions are met. These include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), not being used solely for cooling and not being within the curtilage of a listed building.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?

It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat, and the survey checks each one.

How it works

We keep the work area tidy as we go, with sheets down and mess cleared as we go. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Somewhere like Halton, it helps to know about lanes, gates and where to park.

  1. We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
