Need air source heat pumps in Groombridge?

Let and managed properties

Portfolio owners often want one contractor and one number. Our area covers Greater London and the South East, so a run of properties can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system and we’re happy to deal with whoever it is.

Air source heat pumps in Groombridge

A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home, using electricity to drive the process. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. If you are dealing with not knowing whether a grant applies and choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air, we can sort it out.

In a place like Groombridge, some homes are listed, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight and each visit is recorded.

After we have gone

A little care keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Seal draughts where you can
  • Know the servicing conditions in your warranty
  • File the MCS certificate safely

Where we applied for a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, we keep you informed through the process since the grant goes through the installer.

Don’t cover radiators with furniture or heavy curtains so the heat can get into the room.

What a heat pump looks like in Groombridge

Chapel of St John the Evangelist, listed at grade I, is one of roughly 44 protected buildings and structures in the half-mile around Groombridge’s centre. For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the planning team at Wealden council, which typically handles Groombridge where necessary. Valuation Office Agency council tax records put about 48% of homes in Groombridge and the neighbourhoods around it before 1919, and about 83% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Older homes near Church of St Thomas the Apostle may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. With Groombridge Place about 0.4 miles north-east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

Heat loss surveys

The survey covers the building fabric and how air moves through it, and the size of each room.

Air-to-water heat pumps

Flow temperatures are lower than with a typical boiler, so radiator sizes matter.

FAQs for Groombridge

Do you cover smaller places like Groombridge?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Is the heat pump grant available in Groombridge?

Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Groombridge is in England, where it applies. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

What accreditations do you have?

As the law requires for refrigerant work, we’re an F-Gas certified company. We’re also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.

How much time does a heat pump install need?

A typical installation takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. We plan the work so you’re without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before work begins.

How does the warranty work?

Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. Daikin, for instance, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, usually whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

Is a heat pump permitted development?

Often not in England, as many heat pumps on houses are permitted development provided the conditions are met. These include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), not being used solely for cooling and not being within the curtilage of a listed building.

How the visit works

We keep the work area tidy as we go, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Groombridge.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you are hoping for.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
