Your questions about air source heat pumps in Great Tew
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Great Tew?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Great Tew, if they qualify. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.
Can I fit a heat pump in Great Tew without planning permission?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The Great Tew Conservation Area takes in the middle of Great Tew. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with West Oxfordshire council, which is usually the planning authority for Great Tew.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
How soon will you get back to me?
On the same working day you contact us. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, with a fixed price before work starts.
Do you look at the job first?
Yes. We always look before we price, on a survey, or from your pictures and details where the job is simple. Then you get a fixed-price quote.
How long will it take to install a heat pump?
An installation takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. The survey lets us set a firm programme, so call 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk to arrange one.
How does the warranty work?
Warranty is the manufacturer’s own, on its terms. Each brand sets its own conditions and periods, so we explain them on your quote.
Air source heat pumps in Great Tew, done properly
In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and hot water cylinders, and people most often call us about questions about where the outdoor unit can go and checking whether planning permission is needed.
Homes around Great Tew usually have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.
Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, so we go through them with you rather than leave you to find the small print.

Safe owner checks
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.
Heat pumps in Great Tew: local notes
VOA council tax data put about 41% of homes in and around Great Tew before 1919, and about 78% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
Older homes near Church of St Michael and All Angels may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs.

Looking after your system
Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. A few tips:
- Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit
- Leave indoor units unobstructed
- Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork
If you were eligible for a grant, we handle the application and keep you updated, as the installer applies for it.
Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off as explained at handover.
From one of our customers
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
