About our air source heat pumps in Great Hormead
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home with electricity running the compressor and fans. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. If the problem is radiators that may be too small for a heat pump and deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home, we can help.
Older and listed homes in villages like Great Hormead need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.
Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler, so keep it safe.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Facilities teams in offices, schools and public buildings book us too across Hertfordshire. Work can be phased by floor, zone or building around the people who use them.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the agreement for who looks after the system. We can quote either party, and the paperwork can go to both.

After we have gone
How well a system lasts depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often
- Book a yearly service
- Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing
Should you have questions after the install, call us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we’ll talk it through. Annual servicing helps keep the system working well.
Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and stored items. It needs good airflow to collect heat from outside so keep it unobstructed.
Great Hormead: your questions answered
Is Great Hormead within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Great Hormead?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The centre of Great Hormead is in the Great Hormead Conservation Area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Great Hormead, normally East Hertfordshire council) first.
What accreditations do you have?
F-Gas company certification, NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps, and we’re Checkatrade members. Our engineers also hold the individual F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.
Why use an F-Gas certified company?
F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and we hold it.
Will I get records for the system?
Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
How much VAT is charged on a heat pump in a home?
Not on a home installation at the moment: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. The relief is not available to businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Air source heat pumps in Great Hormead: the local picture
About 35% of homes in Great Hormead and the neighbourhoods around it have been built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and the 2021 Census found about 69% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Detached and semi-detached houses normally have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.
Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Nicholas? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

- Planning approval where permitted development doesn’t apply
- Any gas work on the existing boiler

What happens on the day
Think of the visit in three stages: look, put right and sign off. First we check the system or the space against the plan, then we do the work, and finally everything is tested, recorded and explained. Most of the time goes on the middle part, and that takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. If a lane or gateway near Great Hormead is tight for a van, let us know and we’ll plan for it.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
- We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
- Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
- We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.
How to prepare
- Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
- Mention any parking restrictions near the property
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
