What a heat pump looks like in Fern
About 42% of homes in Fern and the neighbourhoods around it date from 1945 to 1972, according to VOA council tax data, and the 2021 Census found about 62% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St John the Baptist, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. Cliveden lies about 2.7 miles south-east. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.
Fern is about 2 miles north-east of Marlow, in Buckinghamshire. From the centre of Fern to the outskirts, our engineers cover air source heat pumps, from a single room to a whole building. Count every place we list in Buckinghamshire and you reach 263, with Fern on the list. Guildford, roughly 25 miles off, has its own page on this site.
Not far from Fern, a recent job of ours was on Church Street, Staines-upon-Thames (TW18), about 15 miles south-east: installing two LG wall-mounted units in the main office area and a single unit in the client meeting room.
Jobs in SL7 are looked at, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Larger places within reach include High Wycombe (3 miles north), Chesham (10 miles north-east), Amersham (8 miles north-east) and Beaconsfield (4 miles east).

The closest station to Fern is Bourne End station, about 1.1 miles south-east of the centre. Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Fern
A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. The work covers underfloor heating, air-to-air heat pumps and hot water cylinders, and people most often call us about an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life and replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump.
Older and listed homes in villages like Fern need extra care, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.
Warranty periods vary by brand and by product. Daikin, for instance, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, with longer extensions only on its air-to-water heat pumps. For any other brand, we explain the manufacturer’s terms on your quote.

How the visit works
Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Fern.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
- You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
- We install, commission and register the system under MCS.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
- Tell us about parking and loading
- Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
Getting a price
Every quote shows the VAT clearly, with the rate that applies to your job. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. To get one, call 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.
Advice
Common questions in Fern
Will you come out to Fern?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Is a heat pump in Fern permitted development?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Around 11 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Fern. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where necessary, we check with Buckinghamshire council, which is typically the planning authority for Fern.
Which accreditations do you hold?
We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we will tell you what to do first.
How much VAT is charged on a heat pump in a home?
Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%. Businesses pay the standard rate. This is general information, not tax advice.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
It can, for some brands. Send us the make and model and we’ll tell you what the manufacturer expects and stick to the interval they set.
Why it’s worth doing now in Fern
Radiators that are too small for a heat pump’s lower flow temperature leave rooms cool. Checking and upsizing them as part of the installation avoids that. Waiting rarely makes an air conditioning problem smaller.
Every job is different, so we price each one individually. The equipment, how we reach it, the route between units and the work needed all play a part.
Why book with us
- A 24/7 emergency line
- Every job looked at before it’s priced
- A reply the same working day

Other services in Fern
Before you call an engineer
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
How the job changes from property to property
Outdoor unit position and planning
Permitted development conditions in England include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), and use for more than cooling alone. It cannot be within the curtilage of a listed building.
Air-to-air heat pumps
The £2,500 grant for air-to-air applies only when the system replaces the fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s demand. It must be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.
