How we handle air source heat pumps in Ellen's Green
In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit can’t be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. If you’re dealing with working out whether radiators need upsizing and ageing boilers that will need replacing, we can sort it out.
For a home around Ellen's Green that is off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.
If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We’ll tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

How the visit works
We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we let you know if plans need to move. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Ellen's Green.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
- You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
- We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
- The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.
How to prepare
- Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
- Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
- Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
Getting a price
Every quote starts with a look at the job, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your photos and details. After that, we send a fixed price before any work starts.

Fixed-price quotes for air source heat pumps in Ellen's Green
Typical ranges are on our prices page, but every job is priced on its own. What we look at:
- Access, including height, roofs and ladders
- The condition of any existing system
- How far the pipework has to run, and where
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is looked at first, and the price is agreed before any work starts.
What we need to know
When you call or email, it’s useful to have:
- Your installation or service records
- Your consumer unit or fuse board
- A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
For a fixed-price quote, phone 07833 053749 or email us and tell us about the property and what you need. Photos help a lot. You’ll hear back from us the same working day.
Air source heat pumps around Ellen's Green
The last census (2021) found about 81% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder. On the National Heritage List, around 6 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Ellen's Green; Old Cottage (grade II) is one. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with Horsham council, normally the planning authority here.
As an MCS certified installer, we can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you. Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

Ellen's Green: your questions answered
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Ellen's Green?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Ellen's Green, if they qualify. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Is Ellen's Green within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
How soon will you get back to me?
You will hear from us the same working day. If it’s an emergency, ring the 24/7 line instead.
Do you look at the job first?
Yes. For simple jobs, photos and a few details can be enough, while bigger systems and repairs that need testing get a visit.
Will my radiators work with a heat pump?
Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. At the lower temperatures a heat pump uses, radiators need more surface, and the survey checks each one.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
It takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time, and we confirm the timing with your quote.
When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:
- Formal advice on VAT for your situation
- Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Planning approval where permitted development does not apply
Not sure which it is? You can ring us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Before you call an engineer
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.
From one of our customers
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
