Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Congelow

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit can’t be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. We’re often asked to deal with planning and permitted development questions and working out where a cylinder could go, across air-to-air heat pumps, radiator systems and hot water cylinders.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Congelow, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.

Looking after a system is mostly common sense: keep the outdoor unit clear, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on cleaning and book a service at the interval they recommend. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. The work itself takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Work in Congelow is booked in advance at a time that suits you.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time

How to get a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Congelow questions

Will you come out to Congelow?

Yes. Congelow is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Congelow?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Congelow, if they qualify. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Should I choose air-to-water or air-to-air?

Air-to-water feeds your central heating and hot water, while air-to-air warms and cools rooms directly. With air-to-air, hot water needs another source, and we explain which suits your home.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

It can, for some brands. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we’ll explain them and stick to the interval they set.

Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?

The heat loss survey answers that, room by room. Where a radiator is already large enough, it stays, and any that need upsizing are set out in the quote.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for problems that can’t wait for a planned visit. Call 07833 053749 and tell us what’s happened.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Only one grant is available per property, and it cannot replace a low-carbon system. Hybrids are excluded.

Hot water cylinders

An older cylinder may not suit a heat pump and we tell you if it needs replacing.

What a heat pump looks like in Congelow

About 71% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 47 within half a mile of the centre, such as Church of St Peter and St Paul (grade I). So the heat pump survey asks two extra questions here: is the home listed, and is it inside a conservation area?

Period properties close to St Peter's and St Paul's Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

When to call us in Congelow

Many people look at heat pumps when an oil, LPG or gas boiler is getting old. Planning the change before the boiler fails gives you time to survey, design and apply for any grant instead of making a rushed decision when the heating stops.

These are the situations we see most often:

  • Deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home
  • Working out where a cylinder could go
  • Wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating

A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs.

What your quote should include

  • Whose warranty applies, and on what terms
  • The make and model of any parts or equipment being quoted
  • Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why

Rented and managed buildings

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the property, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed-price quote.

Under the GB F-gas rules, responsibility for leak checks is shared between whoever operates the equipment and the engineers who work on it. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system and we are happy to deal with whoever it is.

What a customer said

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
