Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Claygate

An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss and anything that needs changing is in the quote. The work covers underfloor heating, air-to-air heat pumps and radiator systems, and common reasons people get in touch are planning and permitted development questions and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump.

If your home in or near Claygate is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

How it works

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the pictures you sent. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Claygate.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

How to prepare

  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
  • Clear a path to the units and the space around them

Here’s what helps us quote: the address and the type of property, a few photos, the make and model of any existing system and anything you’ve noticed, such as an error code or a noise. Once you have those, call us on 07833 053749 or email us.

Homes in Claygate and heat pumps

On the National Heritage List, around 4 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Claygate; Martins Farmhouse (grade II) is one. For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with Maidstone council, normally the planning authority here where needed. VOA council tax data put about 36% of homes in Claygate and the neighbourhoods around it before 1919, and the 2021 Census found about 71% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. In older homes, the heat loss calculation is especially important, as solid walls and draughts change the size of heat pump needed. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Older homes near Church of St Margaret may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Do you need air source heat pumps in Claygate?

Many enquiries start with a question about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Eligibility depends on the property, the system and the scheme rules and we confirm it before you go ahead.

Most people get in touch when they notice something like this:

  • Wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating
  • Deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home
  • Planning and permitted development questions

A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs.

What your quote should include

  • Who does the electrical work, and whether they can certify it
  • What’s in the price and what is not
  • Whether you get F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved

Common questions in Claygate

Will you come out to Claygate?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Is the heat pump grant available in Claygate?

Claygate is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. Every visit is written up, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

It can, for some brands. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we’ll explain them and stick to the interval they set.

Will my radiators work with a heat pump?

It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat, and the survey checks each one.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and it also matters for the manufacturer’s warranty. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

When it’s something else

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Formal advice on VAT for your situation
  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

If in doubt, ring us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before booking.
