Air source heat pumps in Chithurst

Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it doesn’t apply to businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. The work covers homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, hot water cylinders and underfloor heating, and common reasons people get in touch are no space for a hot water cylinder and comparing heat pump types.

In a place like Chithurst, some homes are listed, and permitted development does not cover listed buildings, so consent comes first.

For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We will explain how the manufacturer’s terms are likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

The process

You do not need to do much on the day. Just let us in and point us to the units, or to where they’ll be fitted, and the rest is down to us. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. Visits to Chithurst are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

Getting a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: the address and the type of property, a few pictures, the make and model of any existing system and any symptoms, from error codes to drips. Once you have those, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Owner checks or an engineer?

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

Air source heat pumps in Chithurst: the local picture

The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures put about 41% of homes across Chithurst and its surrounding area before 1919, and about 82% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Historic houses such as Cowdray House, about 3.1 miles east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in. Period properties close to Chithurst Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

When something else is needed

Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • A grant for a home that does not meet the scheme rules
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Any gas work on the existing boiler

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll say what we think.

Questions from Chithurst

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Chithurst?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Around 7 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Chithurst. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Chithurst, normally Chichester council).

Will you come out to Chithurst?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Is there a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

A £2,500 grant is available in some cases. It won’t apply if the system is an add-on next to a boiler, and it must cover the whole heating demand.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Am I eligible for a heat pump grant?

That depends on the scheme conditions, which we check for you. As the installer, we make the application where you qualify.

How quickly will you reply?

You’ll hear from us the same working day. For a breakdown that can’t wait, call our 24/7 emergency line.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for breakdowns that cannot wait. Call 07833 053749 and tell us what’s happened.

System by system

Outdoor unit position and planning

The outdoor unit needs a position with good airflow, a solid base and a sensible pipe route. Noise is part of the MCS 020(a) check, so we consider nearby homes too.
