Air source heat pumps in Burford
Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it doesn’t apply to businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. Typical jobs include an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life and checking emitters for a heat pump, across air-to-air heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-water heat pumps.
Homes around Burford typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder, so heat loss, radiators and the electrics are what we check.
The records are your system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer and it’s worth keeping safe.

Air source heat pumps in Burford: the local picture
About 38% of homes across Burford and its surrounding area were built before 1919, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and the 2021 Census found about 73% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. In older homes, the heat loss calculation is especially important, as solid walls and draughts change the size of heat pump needed. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. Burford’s centre falls inside the Burford Conservation Area. Church of St John the Baptist, listed at grade I, is one of roughly 251 protected buildings and structures in the half-mile around Burford’s centre. Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with the local planning authority (usually West Oxfordshire council) before the heat pump design is finished.
Minster Lovell Hall, roughly 4.4 miles east, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St John the Baptist, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

What the work involves, system by system
Air-to-air heat pumps
The £2,500 grant for air-to-air applies only when the system replaces the fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s demand. It also has to be fitted by an MCS certified installer, in a home.
Outdoor unit position and planning
Where the outdoor unit goes depends on airflow, access and the route into the house. We also consider neighbours and noise, as MCS 020(a) includes a noise check.
What happens on the day
The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. On site, it takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Tell us about any gates or steps at your property near Burford when you book.
- It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
- A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
- A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
- Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
- Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.
Before we arrive
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
- Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
How to get a quote
Getting a quote is straightforward. Call or email with a few details and we’ll come back to you the same working day. If we need to see the property first, we book a survey at a time that works for you.

Owner checks or an engineer?
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

Common questions in Burford
Is Burford within the area you cover?
Yes. Burford is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Is the heat pump grant available in Burford?
Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Burford is in England, where it applies. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.
Is the equipment covered by a warranty?
It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.
Should I choose air-to-water or air-to-air?
The right choice depends on the property and what you need. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions. We explain the options after the survey.
Will skipping a service affect the warranty?
Each manufacturer decides. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, the approach is the same: a look first, a fixed-price quote and written records.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
Honest limits
Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It won’t put right:
- Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf
- Any gas work on the existing boiler
- Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
If you are not sure, just call 07833 053749 or use the quote form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.
