Air source heat pumps in Brondesbury, done properly
Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit can’t be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. The work covers hot water cylinders, underfloor heating and air-to-air heat pumps, and common reasons people get in touch are no space for a hot water cylinder and deciding on the outdoor unit position.
For flats in Brondesbury, the lease, the freeholder and the rules for flats all come into it. The planning rules for flats are stricter than for houses, and we check before designing.
Warranty periods vary by brand and by product. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, with longer extensions only on its air-to-water heat pumps. For any other brand, we explain the manufacturer’s terms on your quote.

The process
Each visit runs to the same pattern: agree the plan on site, protect the area, do the work, check the system and talk you through it. On site, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. If a freeholder or agent needs to agree the work in Brondesbury, we can send them the details.
- It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
- The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
- We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
- We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
- We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.
Getting ready for the visit
- Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in
- Tell us about parking and loading
- Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits

Homes in Brondesbury and heat pumps
About 66% of homes in Brondesbury and the neighbourhoods around it were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and Census 2021 figures found about 86% of households live in flats. Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. Flats are often harder for air-to-water systems, so we look at whether air-to-air suits better. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.
Fenton House lies about 1.5 miles north-east. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

What the work involves, system by system
VAT on heat pumps
For air-to-air systems, HMRC’s view depends on the product and the situation, so we confirm the VAT on your quote.
Air-to-air heat pumps
An air-to-air system heats rooms directly and can also provide cooling. They don’t heat hot water, so that has to come from elsewhere.
Brondesbury questions
Will a heat pump in Brondesbury need planning permission?
The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. Central Brondesbury sits inside a conservation area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Brondesbury, typically Brent council) first.
Is the heat pump grant available in Brondesbury?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Brondesbury, if they qualify. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Will I get records for the system?
Yes. You get a written record of each visit, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. File them with the system’s paperwork.
Which accreditations do you hold?
F-Gas company certification, NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps, plus Checkatrade membership. Engineers who handle refrigerant hold their own F-gas qualifications as well.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
The work takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. The survey lets us set a firm programme, so phone 07833 053749 or send an email to arrange one.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes. We always look before we price, either on a site survey or from photos and details for simple jobs. Then you get a fixed-price quote.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
Owner checks or an engineer?
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.
Signs you need air source heat pumps in Brondesbury
For homes with no mains gas, heated by oil or LPG, a heat pump is well worth considering. Until March 2027, an extra £1,500 is available for air source and ground source heat pumps in homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas where the home is eligible.
What we’re most often called about:
- Deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home
- Questions about listed buildings or conservation areas
- Wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating
Older homes near Christ Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.
What your quote should include
- Whether they hold F-Gas company certification, not just individual qualifications
- What the manufacturer’s warranty covers and for how long
- What paperwork you’ll receive afterwards
