Air source heat pumps in Bedlar's Green
In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. The work covers homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, air-to-air heat pumps and underfloor heating, and people most often call us about comparing heat pump types and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump.
For a home around Bedlar's Green that is off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.
Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler, so keep it safe.

What we do, step by step
Wherever the system can be run before we leave, we run it and check it in operation. Then we show you what we have done and answer any questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. The visit takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We agree a date with you and plan the visit to Bedlar's Green so we arrive with what’s needed.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
- From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

When something else is needed
Air source heat pumps cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:
- Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Tax advice on your own circumstances
- Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form and we’ll say what we think.

Bedlar's Green questions
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Bedlar's Green?
Bedlar's Green is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.
Will a heat pump in Bedlar's Green need planning permission?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Historic England lists about 13 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Bedlar's Green. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Bedlar's Green, normally Uttlesford council).
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes, any time. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we’ll agree what happens next.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.
How does the warranty work?
Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. Daikin, for instance, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
That depends on the brand. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.
What’s the price of a heat pump installation?
Air-to-water systems are £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before any grant. The final price depends on the heat loss survey, the radiators and the cylinder, and you get a fixed-price quote.
Before you call an engineer
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are typically the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
What the work involves, system by system
Radiators and underfloor heating
Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators may need to be larger, and the survey checks each one.
Air-to-water heat pumps
The price for air-to-water is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Eligible homes in England and Wales can get a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant towards it and the installer applies.
What a heat pump looks like in Bedlar's Green
About 42% of homes in Bedlar's Green and the neighbourhoods around it date from 1945 to 1972, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and the last census (2021) found about 63% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.
If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Giles, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. Historic houses such as Barrington Hall, about 2.3 miles south-east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.
