How we handle air source heat pumps in Barkham

An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss and anything that needs changing is in the quote. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and radiator systems, and people most often call us about finding a place for the outdoor unit and a boiler that’s getting old.

Older and listed homes in villages like Barkham need extra care, and permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings, so we check consent first.

Aftercare is simple, and most of it is in the manual: clear space around the outdoor unit, the cleaning the manual describes and a service at the recommended interval. That also helps where the warranty terms ask for regular servicing.

The process

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Barkham.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.

What a heat pump looks like in Barkham

The 2021 Census found about 90% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. The centre of Barkham lies within a conservation area. Historic England lists about 7 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Barkham, including Barkham Manor (grade II). Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with Wokingham council, typically the planning authority here before the heat pump design is finished.

Older homes near Church of St James may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

Cylinder size is based on your household’s needs.

Outdoor unit position and planning

Where the outdoor unit goes depends on airflow, access and the route into the house. Noise is part of the MCS 020(a) check, so we consider nearby homes too.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Barkham

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Barkham?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Barkham, if they qualify. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Is Barkham within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes, any time. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we will tell you what to do first.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. We always look before we price, either on a site survey or from photos and details for simple jobs. Then you get a fixed-price quote.

Do you work on all makes?

We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we’ll take it from there.

Honest limits

We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Any gas work on the existing boiler
  • Tax advice on your own circumstances
  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems

If in doubt, call us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form and we’ll say what we think.
