Air conditioning installation in Worthing

Worthing’s long seafront, Regency and Victorian streets, interwar suburbs and modern apartment blocks all get a lot of sun. Rooms facing south can heat up fast, and top-floor flats can stay warm long into the night. We install, service and repair air conditioning across the town, from one wall-mounted unit in a bedroom to multi-split systems for a whole house and commercial systems for shops, offices, cafés and surgeries.

We’re based in East Grinstead, West Sussex, and we work across the county, Worthing included. We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We fit leading brands such as Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba and LG, and we explain the manufacturer’s warranty for your chosen unit on the quote.

Every job runs the same way. We look at the property on a site survey, or from photos for simpler jobs. You get a fixed-price quote. We install, repair or service the system. Then we commission it, record the refrigerant details for your F-Gas records and show you the controls. A single-room split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT; our Worthing cost guide explains what changes the price.

For an existing system, our servicing is typically £95–£150 + VAT a year, and our repairs cover all makes, with diagnosis from £75 + VAT.

If you’re thinking about heating as well as cooling, there may be help available. An air-to-air heat pump can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in England, but only if it replaces your existing fossil-fuel heating and meets the home’s full heating demand, and it must be fitted by an MCS-certified installer. It isn’t available for a unit added alongside a boiler. For homes, HMRC’s Notice 708/6 also zero-rates air source heat pumps until 31 March 2027; we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.

Coastal homes and the effect of salt air

The outdoor unit is the part that suffers by the sea. Salt carried inland on the wind lands on the outdoor coil, and over time it can corrode the thin aluminium fins and the joints in the copper pipework. Units on Marine Parade or facing straight out to sea wear faster than those a few roads back. Some manufacturers make coil coatings or models suited to coastal sites, and their installation manuals give advice on positions near the sea. We take that into account when we choose a unit, and we look for a sheltered wall where we can.

Regular cleaning is the best protection. On a service visit we rinse salt and dirt off the outdoor coil, check the fins, mounting brackets and electrical connections, and look for early corrosion. For homes near the front, we suggest a yearly service at least. Our guide to salt air protection explains more.

Seafront flats bring their own questions. Balconies look ideal for an outdoor unit, but many buildings restrict what goes on them, and the lease will usually need the landlord’s consent. Pipe runs from an inner bedroom to the balcony need planning, and condensate water has to drain away properly, sometimes with a small condensate pump.

Further back, Worthing’s interwar and post-war semis and bungalows are often simpler. A multi-split system can cool two to five rooms from one outdoor unit at the side or rear, typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT for two rooms. In a bungalow, short pipe runs can keep costs down.

Most split systems also heat. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning, so tell us if you want heating as well, because it affects the sizing.

Worthing also has many bungalows and retirement flats, where staying cool in a heatwave matters a great deal. A wall-mounted unit with a simple remote, set up for the person who will use it, often works best. We take time at handover to explain the controls and set sensible temperatures. Our guide to cooling for elderly relatives has more tips.

A recent job in Worthing

Marine Parade, Worthing (BN11)

Property
A seafront apartment on the third floor.
Work carried out
Installation of a Samsung wall-mounted unit in the main living area. Seafront installations require specific attention to the outdoor unit positioning: sea air accelerates corrosion of standard aluminium fins. A marine-grade outdoor unit was specified with epoxy-coated heat exchanger fins, positioned on the rear balcony away from direct sea spray.
Outcome
The owner reported the apartment was previously unusable in summer due to the west-facing aspect and direct afternoon sun. The system now maintains a comfortable temperature throughout the day and the marine-grade specification means no corrosion issues after two full seasons.

Planning and conservation areas in Worthing

Planning in the town is handled by Worthing Borough Council through Adur & Worthing Councils, whose planning pages let you check whether you need permission and view applications. The council lists 27 conservation areas in Worthing, including Marine Parade and Hinterland, Steyne Gardens, West Tarring and Goring, on its conservation areas page. Two of them, Castle Goring and Highdown, are in the South Downs National Park, where the National Park Authority handles planning.

For houses, an air source heat pump can be permitted development if it meets set limits. The Planning Portal’s heat pump guidance explains them: an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), not used solely for cooling, not on a pitched roof, and in conservation areas, not on a wall or roof facing the road. Flats have tighter limits. A cooling-only air conditioning unit isn’t covered, so the council needs to be asked. Listed building consent is a separate matter.

On the seafront and in the older streets, appearance matters. We look for positions out of sight from the road, run pipework neatly or hide it, and supply the product data and drawings for any application or landlord request. The council makes the decision, and we start only once the consents are in place.

The new electrical circuit is notifiable under Part P. As the Planning Portal explains, a registered competent person can self-certify it. We’re NICEIC approved, so we certify it and give you the paperwork.

If you live in a seafront block, the managing agent will often have a policy on balconies and outside walls. Ask early, as it can take time to get an answer.

Worthing shops, offices and surgeries

Worthing’s town centre, seafront cafés, offices and healthcare premises all need dependable cooling in summer. We install and maintain commercial air conditioning for them, including ceiling cassettes, ducted systems and VRF. See our pages on retail, GP surgeries and offices.

Business systems need leak checks above the F-gas thresholds, refrigerant records and, over 12 kW, TM44 inspections. A maintenance contract keeps coastal units clean and the paperwork in order.

Seafront cafés and shops often have little outside space and flats above, so the outdoor unit may need to go on a rear wall, a flat roof or in a yard. We plan for noise at night and for salt exposure, and we design maintenance around the coast. For surgeries and clinics, we focus on steady temperatures, quiet units in treatment rooms and clean filters. Older systems on R410A can still be repaired legally; our guide to repairing or replacing older systems explains the choices.

Churches, halls and community buildings in the town have their own challenges: large volumes, occasional use and often listed status. Our guide to churches and village halls explains the options, from heating-led heat pumps to cooling for busy events.

Tell us how the building is used, and we’ll design the system around that.

How it works

  1. Diagnose. We look at the rooms or building on a site survey, or from your photos for simple jobs, and work out what size and type of system it needs.
  2. Quote. You get a fixed-price quote with the make and model of every unit, the pipe runs, electrics and condensate route, and the VAT.
  3. Treat. An F-Gas certified engineer installs, repairs or services the system, with any new circuit done by our NICEIC approved electricians.
  4. Sign off. We commission and leak-test the system, keep the F-Gas records, explain the controls and go through the manufacturer’s warranty terms for your brand.

Questions from Worthing

How does sea air affect air conditioning in Worthing?

Salt can corrode the outdoor coil over time, especially near the front. A suitable unit, a sheltered spot and a yearly service with coil cleaning all help.

Sometimes. It depends on the building’s rules, your lease and whether the unit has enough space and airflow. We check on the survey.

Is my street in a conservation area?

Worthing has 27 conservation areas. The council’s conservation areas page has maps, or we can check for you on the survey.
