What affects the cost of air conditioning

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • What state the existing equipment is in
  • The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
  • The pipe route between the units

Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before we start.

What to send for a quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
  • A short video of any fault, such as a noise or a flashing light
  • The paperwork from the last service, if you have it

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. Then you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Air conditioning in Well End

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and as NICEIC approved contractors we can install and certify it as part of the job. Every installation in Well End begins with a look at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go, followed by a fixed-price quote with the brand, model and every part of the job set out.

A typical install in Well End is an indoor unit high on an outside wall, a neat pipe run and an outdoor unit on a bracket or ground pad, with the condensate drained away safely.

Villages like Well End often have older houses and cottages, some of them listed. That matters, because a listed home needs consent and permitted development rules don’t apply to it.

Warranty periods vary by brand and by product. For example, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and its longer extensions apply to its air-to-water units only. Whatever the brand, the manufacturer’s terms are explained on your quote.

What air conditioning can’t fix

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air conditioning won’t do:

  • Central heating repairs
  • Damp or condensation caused by leaks or poor ventilation in the building (that needs the cause fixing)
  • A building fabric problem such as single glazing or no loft insulation

If you are not sure, just ring us on 07833 053749 or send an email and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

Homes in Well End and air conditioning

The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures date about 42% of homes in the Well End area to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and about 62% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. We check the wall construction on homes of that age, as it decides how the pipework goes through. With homes like that, finding a sensible outdoor unit position is rarely hard, and a multi-split lets two or more rooms run off it.

Homes near St Mark are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. About 2.2 miles south-east stands Cliveden. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

Well End: your questions answered

Will air conditioning in Well End need planning permission?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. There’s a conservation area, the Abbotsbrook Conservation Area, close to central Well End. Permitted development only covers heat pumps that are not used solely for cooling, and not within the grounds of a listed building. Conservation areas add limits on outdoor units facing a road. Where necessary, we check with Buckinghamshire council, which is usually the planning authority for Well End.

Can you do air conditioning in Well End?

Yes. We work across London and the South East from our base in East Grinstead, and Well End is part of that. Get in touch with the details and we reply the same working day.

Which brands do you work with?

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.

How much is air conditioning for one room?

From £1,200 + VAT for a single-room split, with a typical range of £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. That covers supply, installation, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork and is fixed after a survey or from pictures.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

Is the equipment covered by a warranty?

Warranty is the manufacturer’s own, on its terms. Each brand sets its own conditions and periods, so we explain them on your quote.

How long does it take to fit air conditioning?

A single-room system is typically fitted in a day. Multi-room and ducted systems take longer, depending on the pipe routes and access, and we tell you how long on the quote.

How the visit works

Think of the visit in three stages: look, put right and sign off. First we check the system or the space against the plan, then we do the work, and finally everything is tested, recorded and explained. The middle part takes longest, which takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system. Visits to Well End are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from pictures and details for simple jobs.
  2. Each room is sized and you get a fixed-price quote setting out the equipment and the unit positions.
  3. The units go up and the pipework, cable and condensate drain are run neatly between them.
  4. The electrical supply is connected, and the refrigerant circuit is pressure tested and evacuated.
  5. The system is commissioned and checked in every mode, and we hand over the controls, F-Gas records and warranty information.

How to prepare

  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Advice

Leave it or put it right?

Refrigerant rules have changed what new systems use. Since 2025, new single split systems with less than 3 kg of refrigerant can’t use F gases with a GWP above 750, so new splits use refrigerants such as R32, with a GWP of 675. R410A, used in many older systems, has a GWP of 2088. Waiting rarely makes an air conditioning problem smaller.

Whatever the property, the quote works the same way: what’s needed, how we reach it, the parts and the labour. Call for a fixed-price quote and we’ll go through it with you.
