Air conditioning for St James's

About our air conditioning in St James's

Air conditioning isn’t only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust makes the same point: an air-to-air heat pump is what many people simply call air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. If you want air conditioning in St James's, you get one team and one number from survey to sign-off.

Top-floor flats and rooms with big south- or west-facing windows tend to be the first to overheat in London. Many people start with one wall-mounted unit in the room that suffers most, and a multi-split can cover more rooms from one outdoor unit where space outside is short.

We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

What the work involves, system by system

Pipework and condensate drains

Cooling produces water as the air is dried, which the condensate drain takes away. If gravity will not do it, a condensate pump is fitted, and we plan that on the survey.

Electrical supply

The fuse board is looked at during the survey, so the quote covers any electrical work needed. An older board may need extra work and we’ll tell you if yours does.

Air conditioning in St James's: local notes

The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures put about 54% of homes in and around St James's before 1919, and about 94% of households live in flats, according to the last census (2021). Older properties often mean solid walls and period details, so pipe runs are planned to stay neat and out of sight. For a flat, we look at balconies, flat roofs and rear walls for the outdoor unit, and the lease often needs checking first. London installs often hinge on outside space, the lease and access to the building.

Marlborough House, about 0.3 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it. If you commute from London Charing Cross station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that’s needed.

St James's is about 1 mile south-east of City of Westminster, in Greater London. Anywhere in W1F, we cover air conditioning. We cover 764 places across Greater London, from busy centres to quieter spots.

Not far from St James's, a recent job of ours was on East Hill, Wandsworth (SW18), about 4 miles south-west: installing a Daikin wall-mounted unit in the open-plan living area. More about it

Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in St James's

You will get a fixed price before work begins. It’s based on:

  • What state the existing equipment is in
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The type of system, from a single split to a larger system

Typical ranges are on our prices page, but each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

What we need to know

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price a simple job. Send what you can of the following:

  • The make and model of the system, from the label
  • The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go
  • The postcode and whether it’s a home, flat or business

If you need air conditioning in St James's, call 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form. Let us know the type of property and what you need, plus some pictures if they’re to hand. We reply the same working day.

How it works

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems. If a freeholder or agent needs to agree the work in St James's, we can send them the details.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
  2. Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
  3. The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
  4. Before it runs, the pipework is proved tight and put under vacuum.
  5. Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area

Advice

Why deal with it now?

There’s a tax point for homes: HMRC zero-rates the installation of energy-saving materials in homes until 31 March 2027, after which the rate becomes 5%. Whether a particular system qualifies depends on the facts, so we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. Getting the work done in St James's before summer avoids the busiest weeks.

Putting several jobs into one visit can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

Why us?

  • 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns
  • Every job looked at before it’s priced
  • Electrical work covered by our NICEIC approval

St James's: your questions answered

Can you do air conditioning in St James's?

We do: St James's falls inside our working area. Tell us a little about the job and we will take it from there.

Can I fit air conditioning in St James's without planning permission?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. The Regent Street Conservation Area takes in the middle of St James's. Put simply: reversible systems on houses can be permitted development, cooling-only ones can’t, listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit outdoor units facing a road. When your property needs a decision, we contact the planning department at Westminster council, normally the authority for St James's.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, we work the same way: a look first, a fixed-price quote and written records.

Do you work on all makes?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and explain why.

Do I need a new electrical circuit?

Normally, yes. We check your consumer unit on the survey and include any electrical work on the quote and we install and certify the circuit as NICEIC approved contractors.

Does air conditioning work as heating?

Most of the time, yes. Running as a heat pump, it moves heat in from outside rather than making it from electricity alone. If you want it to replace your main heating, ask about air-to-air heat pumps and the conditions for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

Which type of air conditioning is best?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.

From one of our customers

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
