Need air conditioning in St Clement's?

When to call us in St Clement's

Some people come to us for heating rather than cooling. Direct electric heaters convert electricity into heat one for one, while an air-to-air heat pump moves heat from outside, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. Most modern split systems work this way.

Common reasons people call us are:

  • A study or office that overheats during the day
  • Not knowing which system, size or brand to choose
  • A portable unit with a hose out of the window

Around St Clement's Church, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install.

Our hiring checklist

Air conditioning installation in St Clement's

Think of it as diagnose, treat and sign off: the survey diagnoses what the rooms need, the installation is the treatment and commissioning is the sign-off. The sign-off includes testing every mode, showing you the controls and handing over the F-Gas records. Modern air conditioning heats as well as cools: in heating mode they work as an air-to-air heat pump, which is why many owners use theirs all year.

A typical install in St Clement's is an indoor unit high on an outside wall, a neat pipe run and an outdoor unit on a bracket or ground pad, with the drain run planned so it never drips where it shouldn’t.

Outdoor units around St Clement's often sit on the ground or a low wall bracket at the back of the house, where it’s out of sight from the road and easy to service.

Some warranty terms depend on the system being serviced regularly by a qualified engineer. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight, and every service is written up.

What we do, step by step

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you don’t need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system. Send pictures of the space and the outside wall, and we can plan the work near St Clement's.

  1. You send pictures, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. Each room is sized and the unit positions agreed, then you get a fixed-price quote.
  3. On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
  4. Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
  5. The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

Preparing for the visit

  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area

Advice

Air conditioning in St Clement's: local notes

About 49% of homes in the St Clement's area were built before 1919, according to VOA council tax data, and about 45% of households live in flats, according to the 2021 Census. Older homes often have solid walls, which take longer to core drill, so we plan pipe routes carefully and keep them as discreet as we can. For a flat, we look at balconies, flat roofs and rear walls for the outdoor unit, and the lease often needs checking first.

Holywell Manor, about 0.5 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it.

Questions from St Clement's

Is air conditioning in St Clement's permitted development?

It depends on the property. The St Clement's and Iffley Road Conservation Area takes in the middle of St Clement's. A system that heats as well as cools may not need an application on a house, provided it stays within the permitted development limits. Cooling-only units get no such allowance, and listed buildings and road-facing positions in conservation areas need more care. We speak to the planning department at Oxford City council, normally the authority for St Clement's when it matters.

Do you cover St Clement's for air conditioning?

Yes. We work across London and the South East from our base in East Grinstead, and St Clement's is part of that. Tell us a little about the job and we will take it from there.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and we hold it.

Do I need a new electrical circuit?

Most of the time, yes: a dedicated circuit is needed. Adding a new circuit is notifiable building work under Part P unless it’s done by a registered competent person, and we are NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.

How do you size the system?

Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. An undersized unit never catches up, and an oversized one cycles and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.

Should I choose wall-mounted, ducted or cassette?

It depends on the rooms and the building. A split suits one room, a multi-split several, a ducted system hides the unit, and a cassette spreads air across larger rooms. We recommend one on the survey and explain why.

Can I have air conditioning in a flat?

In many cases, but permissions come first. Leaseholders normally need consent from the landlord or management company for an outdoor unit and holes through outside walls and the lease will say. Planning rules for flats are tighter too, so we point out anything that may need permission on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.

Safe owner checks

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and ring us on 07833 053749.

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

Why deal with it now?

Refrigerant rules have changed what new systems use. Since 2025, new single split systems with less than 3 kg of refrigerant cannot use F gases with a GWP above 750, which is why R32, with a GWP of 675, is now common. Older R410A systems have a GWP of 2088. For a place like St Clement's, booking ahead lets us plan the visit properly.
