Air conditioning across Southgate

Southgate questions

Can you do air conditioning in Southgate?

Yes. We work across London and the South East from our base in East Grinstead, and Southgate is part of that. Tell us a little about the job and we will take it from there.

Will air conditioning in Southgate need planning permission?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Around 29 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Southgate. Permitted development only covers heat pumps that aren’t used solely for cooling, and not within the grounds of a listed building. Conservation areas add limits on outdoor units facing a road. Where needed, we check with Enfield council, which is usually the planning authority for Southgate.

Do you work on all makes?

We install and work on the leading makes, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we’ll take it from there.

What size air conditioning unit do I need?

It depends on the room, not only its floor area. Windows, the direction the room faces, the roof above and the people and equipment in it all count and the survey covers each of them.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

It can go on a wall bracket, at ground level or on a flat roof, chosen for the pipe route, airflow and access. Noise near bedrooms and boundaries is part of the decision and position can affect planning.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

For some brands, yes. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we’ll explain them, and book the service at the interval they recommend.

About our air conditioning in Southgate

Single-room systems are typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, two rooms on a multi-split £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. Those ranges include supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation, with commercial and VRF systems priced after a survey. Modern air conditioning heats as well as cools: the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes called air conditioning, so a system bought for summer earns its keep in winter too.

Top-floor flats and rooms with big south- or west-facing windows tend to be the first to overheat in London. A single wall-mounted unit in the worst room is often where people start, while a multi-split serves several rooms from one outdoor unit, which helps where outside space is limited.

Some warranty terms depend on the system being serviced regularly by a qualified engineer. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight, and every service is written up.

The process

Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system. Some blocks in Southgate need contractor details in advance, so tell us what your building needs.

  1. First comes a site survey, or photos and measurements for a straightforward job.
  2. The quote is fixed and shows the equipment, where each unit goes and what’s included.
  3. The indoor unit is fixed in place, the outside unit positioned, and the connecting runs put in tidily.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. Finally, it’s commissioned, tested in each mode and handed over with the F-Gas records.

Related advice

Looking after it afterwards

Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Shut doors and windows when it’s on
  • Report drips, noises or error codes right away

Commissioning is the last stage: every mode is tested before we go. Once it’s running properly, we take you through the controls and settings so you know how to get the best from it.

Report drips, noises or error codes early. A drip, a noise or a flashing light is often an early sign of a fault and catching it early keeps the repair small.

Signs you need air conditioning in Southgate

Rooms in the roof are often the hardest to keep cool. The roof takes the full force of the sun, and warm air rises from the floors below, which is why a loft bedroom can still be warm at bedtime.

Look out for any of the following:

  • An ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life
  • A loft conversion that is too warm to use
  • Commercial rooms that are too warm for staff

Bruce Castle, about 3.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the manufacturer’s warranty depends on regular servicing
  • What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
  • How VAT is shown, and which rate applies

When it’s something else

In fairness, some problems need a different answer:

  • Gas boiler or central heating faults (we do not work on gas boilers)
  • A ventilation problem rather than a temperature problem
  • A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)

Not sure which it is? You can call 07833 053749 and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

What an install looks like in Southgate

Valuation Office Agency council tax records show about 59% of homes in and around Southgate date from 1919 to 1939. Homes of that age normally have cavity or solid brick walls, and we check which before planning the pipe route. London installs often hinge on outside space, the lease and access to the building.

Homes near Christ Church Southgate Parish Church are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it.
