Air conditioning for California

Homes in California and air conditioning

The 2021 Census found about 86% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. A side passage or back wall normally gives the outdoor unit a home, and more than one bedroom can be cooled through a multi-split.

Living close to Church of St James? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is. Starting with one room is common, and the outdoor unit can be chosen with more rooms in mind.

About our air conditioning in California

Thinking about air conditioning but not sure where to start? Just give us a ring on 07833 053749 or email us with pictures of the rooms and the outside of the property, and we’ll reply the same working day to arrange a survey or a quote. Modern air conditioning heats as well as cools: in heating mode they work as an air-to-air heat pump, so a system bought for summer earns its keep in winter too.

Villages like California often have older houses and cottages, some of them listed. We check that first, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

What happens if it’s left?

New systems now use lower-impact refrigerants. Since 2025, new single split systems with less than 3 kg of refrigerant cannot use F gases with a GWP above 750, which is why R32, with a GWP of 675, is now common. Older R410A systems have a GWP of 2088. A system that’s left with a fault, or without a service, typically costs more to run.

Typical ranges are on our prices page, but your price depends on the job in front of us. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

California: your questions answered

Will you come out to California?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Is air conditioning in California permitted development?

It depends on the property. A conservation area takes in the middle of California. A system that heats as well as cools may not need an application on a house, provided it stays within the permitted development limits. Cooling-only units get no such allowance, and listed buildings and road-facing positions in conservation areas need more care. We speak to the local planning authority (for California, normally Wokingham council) when it matters.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

Which accreditations do you hold?

As the law requires for refrigerant work, we’re an F-Gas certified company. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.

How long does air conditioning installation take?

It takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system. We confirm the time when we quote so there are no surprises.

How quickly will you reply?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. If it’s an emergency, ring the 24/7 line instead.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for breakdowns that cannot wait. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.

What affects the quote in California

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether the existing supply is suitable
  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle
  • The equipment or parts the job needs

No two properties are the same, so we price each one individually. The system, the access, the pipe routes and the parts involved all make a difference.

Before you get in touch

Good pictures often save a visit. Try to include:

  • A few photos of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
  • The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go
  • The fuse board and where it is in the property

To help us quote: the address and the type of property, a few pictures, the make and model of any existing system and anything you’ve noticed, such as an error code or a noise. Then give us a ring on 07833 053749 or send an email.

Keeping the system healthy

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Clean the filters every few weeks when the system is in heavy use
  • Shut doors and windows when it’s on
  • Use moderate settings for comfort and economy

We show you how to take the filters out and clean them. In busy periods, clean them every few weeks, following the manual, and keep space clear around the outdoor unit.

Book an annual service. The engineer cleans the coils and drain, checks the electrics and the refrigerant circuit and catches small problems early, and it keeps any warranty servicing conditions in order.

How the visit works

The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: diagnose, treat and sign off. First we check the system or the space against the plan, then the work itself, and finally we test, record and explain. Most of the time goes on the middle part, which takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to California.

  1. First comes a site survey, or photos and measurements for a straightforward job.
  2. We size the system for each room, then send a fixed-price quote with the units and where they go.
  3. Brackets go on, the units are hung and the refrigerant lines, cable and drain are routed between them.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. We commission the system, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty details.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records

Ask for a quote

Every quote shows the VAT clearly, with the rate that applies to your job. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. For a fixed-price quote, call us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.
