Need air conditioning in Bow?

Air conditioning for homes and businesses in Bow

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. Most split systems we fit in Bow are reversible: the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes called air conditioning, which is why many owners use theirs all year.

Many installs in Bow can go ahead as permitted development, but listed buildings, conservation areas and flats often need consent first: we flag that at the survey.

In Bow, as across London, the rooms that get hottest are typically under the roof or behind large sunny windows. Many people start with one wall-mounted unit in the room that suffers most, and a multi-split can cover more rooms from one outdoor unit where space outside is short.

We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

The process

You don’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we have done. In a London area like Bow, parking and access are worth sorting out before the day.

  1. First comes a site survey, or photos and measurements for a straightforward job.
  2. Cooling loads are worked out room by room, and the written price names the make, the model and every position.
  3. Brackets go on, the units are hung and the refrigerant lines, cable and drain are routed between them.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, with the rate that applies to your job. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. For a fixed-price quote, call us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

Advice

When it’s something else

In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Gas boiler or central heating faults (we don’t work on gas boilers)
  • A room that can’t take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
  • Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling

Not sure which it is? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly.

Bow questions

Is planning permission needed for air conditioning in Bow?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. There’s a conservation area, the Roman Road Market Conservation Area, close to central Bow. Permitted development only covers heat pumps that are not used solely for cooling, and not within the grounds of a listed building. Conservation areas add limits on outdoor units facing a road. Where needed, we check with Tower Hamlets council, which is normally the planning authority for Bow.

Can you fit air conditioning in a London flat in Bow?

In many cases, yes, once the lease and the building’s rules are checked. We look at where the outdoor unit could go, such as a balcony, flat roof or rear wall, and write it up for the freeholder or agent.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For simple jobs, pictures and a few details can be enough, while bigger systems and repairs that need testing get a visit.

How quickly will you reply?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. For a breakdown that can’t wait, call our 24/7 emergency line.

Do you cover Bow?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of the South East, Bow included.

Will you make a mess?

Protection goes down first: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards before we leave.

Homes in Bow and air conditioning

About 44% of homes in Bow and the neighbourhoods around it have been built since 2000, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and the 2021 Census found about 85% of households live in flats. Newer homes typically have cavity walls and loft space that make pipe runs easier, though some estates have planning conditions or covenants worth checking. In flats, the lease and the freeholder normally decide where an outdoor unit can go, and the permitted development rules for flats are tighter. London installs often hinge on outside space, the lease and access to the building.

With historic houses such as Sutton House about 1.6 miles north-west, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules.

When to call us in Bow

Portable units are often where people start, and why they call us. A portable unit has to vent its warm air through a hose out of a window, which lets some heat back in, and its compressor sits in the room with you. A fixed split system puts the compressor outside.

What we are most often called about:

  • An office, shop or restaurant that is uncomfortable for staff and customers
  • Rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night
  • A portable unit with a hose out of the window

If you work from home near Hackney Wick station, a home office that overheats is one of the easiest rooms to cool.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether you get F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved
  • Whether the company is F-Gas certified, and whether you can check it
  • How VAT is shown, and which rate applies

Our hiring checklist

Looking after it afterwards

Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:

  • Wash or vacuum the filters as the manual describes
  • Keep the handover documents somewhere safe
  • Keep the room closed while it runs

The work area is left tidy: dust sheets lifted, offcuts and packaging cleared, and the holes for the pipework sealed. Pipework outside is covered in trunking or insulated and neatly fixed as agreed on the survey.

Report drips, noises or error codes early. A drip, a noise or a flashing light is often an early sign of a fault, and early repairs are typically simpler.
