Air conditioning in OX17: how it works

We fit wall-mounted splits, multi-split systems, ducted systems and ceiling cassettes, with VRF for larger buildings. The right choice depends on the rooms, the building and how visible you want the indoor units to be, and we explain the options on the survey. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, ducted systems and ceiling cassettes, and common reasons people get in touch are a system on old refrigerant that’s due for replacement and old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient.

There’s very little for you to do on the day. Just let us in and point us to the units, or to where they’ll be fitted, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we’ve done.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
  2. Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
  3. The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
  4. Before it runs, the pipework is proved tight and put under vacuum.
  5. Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

Where we install in OX17

Across OX17, from Banbury, Grimsbury and Drayton to the villages, homes range from older terraces and cottages to new estates and flats. Each install starts with a survey of the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go, then a fixed-price quote.

Enquiries from OX17 get a reply on the working day they arrive. Breakdowns can go to the 24/7 line instead.

Banbury: Plenty of people near Banbury station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit. Homes near Saint Paul's are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it.

Looking after your system

Systems last better with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Choose a comfortable set temperature rather than the lowest
  • Let filters dry fully before you put them back
  • Leave space around the outdoor unit
  • Keep the F-Gas records, commissioning details and warranty information together

Commissioning is the last stage: every mode is tested before we go. Once it’s running properly, we take you through the controls and settings, so you are confident using it.

Keep the outdoor unit clear. Leaves, plants, bins and stored items around it restrict the airflow, and the system has to work harder as a result.

What affects the quote in OX17

Typical ranges are on our prices page, but every job is priced on its own. The quote depends on:

  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle
  • What kind of system it is
  • The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
  • The pipe route between the units

The cost depends on the type of system and how many units are involved, the access and what the work involves. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

Asking for a quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • A short video of any fault, such as a noise or a flashing light
  • The fuse board and where it is in the property
  • The make and model of the system, from the label
  • The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Tell us the address and what you need, and many jobs can be priced from that.

When it’s something else

In fairness, some problems need a different answer:

  • Gas boiler or central heating faults (we don’t work on gas boilers)
  • Building damp that has a structural cause
  • A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)

Different systems, different jobs

Ducted systems

One ducted unit can serve more than one room through separate ducts and grilles, which suits new builds, extensions and refurbishments where ceilings are open.

Multi-split systems

You can mix indoor unit types on many multi-split systems: a wall unit in one room, a ducted or floor unit in another, depending on the model. We plan the mix on the survey.

Questions from OX17

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That’s a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We are happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.

Which type of air conditioning is best?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted systems need a ceiling void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.

Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?

In most cases. The fuse board is checked on the survey, and any electrical work goes on the quote, and our NICEIC approval covers the installation and certificate.

What size air conditioning unit do I need?

Floor area is only part of it. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it, and we take them all into account on the survey.

Will I need planning permission?

That depends on what’s being fitted and where. In England, an air source heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets set conditions, including the MCS 020(a) noise check, while a unit that only cools isn’t covered and needs checking with the council. Listed buildings, conservation areas and flats have extra limits. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you work in OX17?

Yes. We work in OX17 and across Oxfordshire, as part of our area across London and the South East. To book, call 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. It’s worth checking before you book, and we are happy to show ours.
