Air conditioning across GU1: what to expect

We fit wall-mounted splits, multi-split systems, ducted systems and ceiling cassettes, with VRF for larger buildings. The right choice depends on the rooms, the building and how visible you want the indoor units to be, and we explain the options on the survey. Common call-outs are for a loft conversion that’s too warm to use and too many options and no clear advice, across multi-split systems, VRF systems and air-to-air heat pumps.

Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first so it does not catch you out. In a business, work can often be done one area at a time. On site, it takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.

  1. You send pictures, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
  4. Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
  5. We commission, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas and warranty paperwork.

How we quote

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why every job is looked at first, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.

For rail, the closest station is London Road (Guildford) station, about 0.6 miles south-east of the centre. Air conditioning across GU1

In GU1, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

Our area stretches from Greater London through Surrey, Kent and Sussex to Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and GU1 sits within it. You reach the same people wherever you are in it.

Guildford: Homes near Church of St John the Evangelist are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. If you commute from London Road (Guildford) station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that’s needed.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

Write down what you notice: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.

System by system

Multi-split systems

With a multi-split, one outdoor unit serves two or more rooms. It saves wall space outside and suits homes where several rooms need cooling and each indoor unit has its own controls.

Ceiling cassettes

A cassette sits flush in a suspended ceiling and spreads air in several directions and they’re a common choice for offices, shops and larger rooms.

Let and managed properties

Whether it’s one property or many, you get the same standard: a look at the job first, a fixed-price quote, work booked with the occupier and written records afterwards.

Portfolio owners often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of properties can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

What air conditioning cannot fix

To be straight with you, some problems need a different answer:

  • Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)
  • A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
  • Building damp that has a structural cause

GU1: your questions answered

How do you size the system?

Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. Too small, and it runs flat out; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the job needs and how to do it, and the quote is based on that.

Do I need planning permission?

It depends on the system and the property. Heat pumps on houses in England can be permitted development when they meet set conditions, including the MCS 020(a) noise check, but a cooling-only unit is not covered, so check with the council. Listed buildings, conservation areas and flats have extra limits. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

How long will the installation take?

It takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems. We confirm the time when we quote, so you can plan around it.

Do I need a new electrical circuit?

Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and we are NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.
