Air conditioning in CO16: how it works

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. The work covers wall-mounted split systems, VRF systems and multi-split systems, and common reasons people get in touch are rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in and an ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life.

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. On site, it takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. You send pictures, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. Each room is sized and the unit positions agreed, then you get a fixed-price quote.
  3. We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
  4. We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
  5. The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

Where we install in CO16

Our air conditioning work across CO16 takes in places such as Clacton-on-Sea, Bocking's Elm and Jaywick and the smaller places around them. We cover every place we list for CO16, 23 in all.

Our area stretches from Greater London through Surrey, Kent and Sussex to Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and CO16 sits within it. One phone number covers all of it. In the coastal parts of CO16, outdoor units benefit from a sheltered position and regular servicing, and some manufacturers offer corrosion-protected coils.

Bocking's Elm: A loft bedroom or a glazed extension is often the room that prompts the first call. Thorpe Hall, about 3.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it.

What we’re called out for in CO16

Computers, screens, lighting and people all give off heat. A home office with a couple of screens, or a meeting room with a few people in it, warms up quickly, even when it isn’t especially hot outside.

Reasons to give us a call include:

  • Too many options and no clear advice
  • Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
  • An old system that needs replacing
  • A portable unit with a hose out of the window

What air conditioning cannot fix

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what air conditioning won’t do:

  • A building fabric problem such as single glazing or no loft insulation
  • Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling
  • Gas boiler or central heating faults (we do not work on gas boilers)

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Keep a note of anything odd: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

Different systems, different jobs

Outdoor unit positions

Noise is part of the decision: keeping it clear of bedrooms and boundaries where we can, and on anti-vibration mounts. It can also affect whether planning permission is needed.

Wall-mounted split systems

For one room, a wall-mounted split is often the simplest answer. One unit inside, one outside, connected by pipework, a cable and a drain, with the route agreed on the survey.

CO16 questions

Who is responsible for leak checks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim and we’ll tell you what your brand asks for.

Is CO16 in your area?

Yes. Our engineers work in CO16, as part of our area across London and the South East. Our base is in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

The position is agreed on the survey, not on the day. It needs space around it to breathe and room for an engineer to service it, and walls or roofs facing a road can raise planning questions. We explain the options and any permissions to check.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes. We always look before we price, either on a site survey or from pictures and details for simple jobs. A fixed-price quote follows.

What size air conditioning unit do I need?

It depends on the room, not only its floor area. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it and the survey covers each of them.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
