About our air source heat pumps in The Heath

Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. We are often asked to deal with checking emitters for a heat pump and planning and permitted development questions, on homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, underfloor heating and radiator systems.

For a home around The Heath that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump.

The records are your system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

Common questions in The Heath

Will you come out to The Heath?

Yes. The Heath is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Is the heat pump grant available in The Heath?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including The Heath, if they qualify. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. That isn’t optional: it’s required by law, and we hold it.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, typically whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Each visit is written up and F-Gas records kept where they apply.

Which accreditations do you hold?

F-Gas company certification, NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps, plus Checkatrade membership. Engineers who handle refrigerant hold their own F-gas qualifications as well.

How quickly will you reply?

On the same working day you contact us. Then we agree a date that works for you, with a fixed price before work starts.

What happens on the day

There’s very little for you to do on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and we take it from there. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. We plan the trip to The Heath around you.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need

What affects the cost of air source heat pumps

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • The distance and route between the indoor and outdoor units
  • How many units are involved
  • What kind of system it is

Typical ranges are on our prices page, but your price depends on the job in front of us. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

Before you get in touch

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • Any error code or flashing light on the display
  • The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
  • Wide photos of the room or the existing unit

Here’s what helps us quote: where the property is and what kind of building it is, a few photos, the brand and model of anything already fitted and anything you’ve noticed, such as an error code or a noise. Then ring 07833 053749 or use the quote form.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Book a yearly service
  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit

Once commissioned, we register the installation with MCS and give you the certificate. File it with the warranty documents, as you may need it later.

Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off, using the settings agreed at handover.

Air source heat pumps in The Heath: the local picture

Moss Cottage, listed at grade II, is one of roughly 12 protected buildings and structures in the half-mile around The Heath’s centre. For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the local planning authority (usually North Hertfordshire council) where necessary. The 2021 Census found about 72% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

If your home is listed, like Shaw's Corner about 4.9 miles south-east, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. Older homes near Church of St Mary may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.
