Air source heat pumps in Sundridge

Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. If the problem is moving away from fossil-fuel heating and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump, we can help.

Homes around Sundridge typically have room outside for a heat pump, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.

Looking after a system is mostly common sense: clear space around the outdoor unit, the cleaning the manual describes and a service at the recommended interval. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

What a heat pump looks like in Sundridge

About 85% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Older homes near Church of St Mary may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. With Quebec House about 2.3 miles west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

Sundridge is about 3 miles west of Sevenoaks, in Kent. Anywhere in TN14, our engineers can take on air source heat pumps. Across Kent, we cover 922 places, Sundridge among them. For properties nearby, see our Bromley page (10 miles or so).

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Sundridge

Will a heat pump in Sundridge need planning permission?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. A conservation area takes in the middle of Sundridge. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights do not reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the local planning authority (for Sundridge, normally Sevenoaks council).

Will you come out to Sundridge?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day.

Can I get a grant for an air-to-air heat pump?

The scheme offers £2,500 for air-to-air, but the conditions are strict. It will not apply if the system is an add-on next to a boiler as it has to meet the full heating demand.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes. For simple jobs, photos and a few details can be enough, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

When will I hear back?

On the same working day you contact us. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, with a fixed price before work starts.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

Check the manufacturer’s terms. Some warranty terms require the system to be serviced regularly by a qualified engineer, so it’s worth checking. Either way, keep a record of every service.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.

Leave it or put it right?

For eligible off-gas homes on oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is on offer until March 2027. For homes that qualify, that’s a reason to look into it now. Waiting rarely makes an air conditioning problem smaller.

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is looked at first, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

Rented and managed buildings

The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. In a let or managed building, it’s worth agreeing who that operator is, and we can work for either side.

Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.

What we do, step by step

There’s very little for you to do on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and the rest is down to us. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. Photos of the existing unit help with repairs and servicing in Sundridge.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Tell us about parking and loading

VAT on heat pumps

HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, but each case depends on the facts, so we confirm the VAT on your quote.

Heat loss surveys

Without a proper survey, a heat pump can be too big or too small, and both cause problems.

A customer’s words
