How we handle air source heat pumps in Stoke-by-Nayland
Air source heat pumps collect heat from outdoor air and bring it inside, using electricity to drive the process. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. If the problem is plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and questions about where the outdoor unit can go, we can sort it out.
If your home in or near Stoke-by-Nayland is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump.
If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We will tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

System by system
VAT on heat pumps
Heat pumps in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% after that following HMRC’s rules on energy-saving materials. Businesses pay the standard rate.
Outdoor unit position and planning
Flats and blocks of flats have different limits, and Article 4 directions can remove rights. Listed buildings also need separate consent and we check what applies to you.
When it’s something else
We’d rather tell you now than sell you work that won’t help, so here are the limits:
- Any gas work on the existing boiler
- Planning approval where permitted development doesn’t apply
- Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
If you’re not sure, just ring us on 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

Air source heat pumps in Stoke-by-Nayland: the local picture
The last census (2021) found about 82% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
Older homes near St Mary's Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

How it works
Our engineers bring the tools, gauges and access equipment the job needs. You only need to give us clear access to the units, or their planned positions, and to the fuse board. The visit takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Stoke-by-Nayland.
- First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
- We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
- We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
- We install the heat pump and connect it up.
- We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions near the property
- Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
- Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits

Questions from Stoke-by-Nayland
Is a heat pump in Stoke-by-Nayland permitted development?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The Stoke by Nayland Conservation Area takes in the middle of Stoke-by-Nayland. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where necessary, we check with Babergh council, which is typically the planning authority for Stoke-by-Nayland.
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Stoke-by-Nayland?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Stoke-by-Nayland, if they qualify. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.
What’s the price of a heat pump installation?
For air-to-water, the price is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) before any grant. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 to eligible homes in England and Wales, and we confirm eligibility before you commit.
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
Are you F-Gas certified?
F-Gas company certification, NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps, and we are Checkatrade members. Engineers who handle refrigerant hold their own F-gas qualifications as well.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.
From one of our customers
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
