Steeple air source heat pumps
We cover Steeple for air source heat pumps. A look at the job first, a fixed-price quote and written records at the end.
- Questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
- Working out whether radiators need upsizing
- Plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump
What we do, step by step
We keep the work area tidy as we go, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. On site, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Steeple.
- First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you are hoping for.
- We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
- The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
- We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
- The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.
Preparing for the visit
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
- Clear a path to the units and the space around them
- Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area

Air source heat pumps in Steeple
For an air-to-water heat pump, the price is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards an eligible air-to-water installation and the installer makes the application. Eligibility depends on the property, so we confirm it before anything is agreed. The work covers hot water cylinders, air-to-water heat pumps and air-to-air heat pumps, and people most often call us about checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and comparing heat pump types.
In a place like Steeple, some homes are listed, and permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings, so consent comes first.
Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight and each visit is recorded.

Steeple questions
Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Steeple?
There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The half-mile around the middle of Steeple holds about 16 listed buildings and structures. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where needed, we check with Maldon council, which is typically the planning authority for Steeple.
Do you cover smaller places like Steeple?
Yes. Steeple is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
How much VAT is charged on a heat pump in a home?
For homes, currently none: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. Businesses and hotels pay the standard rate, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Is there a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?
Yes, but only where it becomes the home’s main heating. An air-to-air heat pump can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating, meets the full heating demand, is fitted by an MCS certified installer and is in a home; as an add-on to a boiler it doesn’t qualify.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
We confirm eligibility at the survey stage. There’s one grant per property, you can’t get one to replace a low-carbon system, and hybrids are excluded, among other rules.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what’s needed, where things go and what access we need and the fixed price is built on it.
What a heat pump looks like in Steeple
The coast is only about 2 miles from Steeple. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. Census 2021 figures found about 81% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
Period properties close to Church of St Lawrence and All Saints can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

When to call us in Steeple
When a home is being extended or renovated, it’s a good moment to look at heat pumps. Pipework, radiators and space for a cylinder are easier to plan while work is going on.
These are the situations we see most often:
- Comparing heat pump types
- No space for a hot water cylinder
- Working out whether radiators need upsizing
A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs.
What to look for in a quote
- Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning
- The make and model of any parts or equipment being quoted
- Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why
Why deal with it now?
A sudden boiler failure rarely leaves room to plan a heat pump properly. Surveying and designing in advance means the system is sized right and any grant is applied for while the old heating still works. Getting the date in early helps for a place like Steeple.
Leaving a fault or an overdue service rarely makes the work cheaper. Faults and wear in a system tend to grow, and a system working harder than it should costs more to run. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call us on 07833 053749 or email us for straight advice and a fixed price.

From one of our customers
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
