Air source heat pumps in Northney: the local picture
The coast is only about 1 mile from Northney. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. Census 2021 figures found about 61% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
With Warblington Castle about 1.1 miles north, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Peter, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

Air source heat pumps in Northney
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home with electricity running the compressor and fans. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. The work covers hot water cylinders, radiator systems and underfloor heating, and people most often call us about plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and questions about where the outdoor unit can go.
Older and listed homes in villages like Northney need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.
Looking after a system is mostly common sense: clear space around the outdoor unit, the cleaning the manual describes and a service at the recommended interval. That also helps where the warranty terms ask for regular servicing.

What we do, step by step
There’s very little for you to do on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and the rest is down to us. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. If a lane or gateway near Northney is tight for a van, let us know and we will plan for it.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
- Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
- Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
Getting a quote
Every quote starts with a look at the job, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your pictures and details. Then you get a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.
Related advice
For landlords and property managers
The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system and we are happy to deal with whoever it is.
Bigger systems bring extra duties: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.
System by system
Outdoor unit position and planning
Permitted development conditions in England include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and must meet MCS 020(a) and not be used solely for cooling. It can’t be within the curtilage of a listed building.
VAT on heat pumps
Heat pumps in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% after that, under HMRC Notice 708/6. It does not apply to businesses.
Why it’s worth doing now in Northney
A heat pump sized without a proper heat loss survey can struggle in cold weather or run inefficiently. A room-by-room survey gets it right first time. A system that’s left with a fault, or without a service, normally costs more to run.
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is looked at first, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

FAQs for Northney
Will a heat pump in Northney need planning permission?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Central Northney is a short walk from the St Peter's, Hayling Island Conservation Area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the planning department at Havant council, usually the authority for Northney.
Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Northney?
It can, as Northney is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we will tell you what to do first.
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
Quite possibly. In England and Wales it pays £7,500 for an eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump, and £2,500 for air-to-air under tighter rules. Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump until March 2027. We check your home against the rules at the survey.
What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?
For air-to-water, it’s £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. Air-to-air prices are set after a survey, and we confirm the VAT on the quote.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?
For homes, currently none: until 31 March 2027 the rate is 0% in residential accommodation, then 5%. Businesses and hotels pay the standard rate, and with air-to-air we confirm the VAT on the quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
