Air source heat pumps in New Street
Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. With air-to-air, hot water has to come from something else. We’re often asked to deal with questions about listed buildings or conservation areas and moving away from fossil-fuel heating, across air-to-air heat pumps, hot water cylinders and underfloor heating.
Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near New Street, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.
We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

For landlords and property managers
If you look after several properties, we can quote and plan the work across all of them. Every address has its own paperwork, so each one has its own history.
Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: systems with an effective rated output over 12 kW need a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.

Heat pumps in New Street: local notes
About 45% of homes across New Street and its surrounding area date from 1945 to 1972, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and about 66% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
If your home is listed, like Cobham College about 3.6 miles north-east, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of Saint Peter, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

Not far from New Street, a recent job of ours was on Station Road, Orpington (BR6), about 10 miles west: installing three Daikin cassette units in the main office area and a wall-mounted unit in the client meeting room.

Before you call an engineer
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrics need care too. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are usually the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Common questions in New Street
Is New Street within the area you cover?
Yes. New Street is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.
Will a heat pump in New Street need planning permission?
The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. The centre of New Street is in a conservation area. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the local planning authority (for New Street, usually Gravesham council).
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the job needs and how to do it and the fixed price is built on it.
Do you work on all makes?
Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.
How do you keep the place clean during the work?
Protection goes down first: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards before we leave.
The process
Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first so it doesn’t catch you out. For businesses, we can normally work room by room or zone by zone. On site, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. For a village like New Street, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.
- It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.
How to prepare
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
- Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
- Let us know where we can park and unload

Advice
System by system
Air-to-air heat pumps
Since 2025, air-to-air heat pumps can also be permitted development in England, subject to the conditions. Cooling-only units are not included, so check with the council.
Air-to-water heat pumps
Air-to-water systems work at lower temperatures than boilers, so radiator sizes matter.
From one of our customers
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
