About our air source heat pumps in Gilston
Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than most boilers which means some radiators may need upsizing. The survey shows which rooms are fine and which need changes and anything that needs changing is in the quote. Common call-outs are for questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and comparing heat pump types, across underfloor heating, radiator systems and air-to-water heat pumps.
In a place like Gilston, some homes are listed, and permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings, so we check consent first.
AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

The process
Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you don’t need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Visits to Gilston are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
- The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
- We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
- We install the heat pump and connect it up.
- We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.
Getting ready for the visit
- Keep pets out of the rooms we’re working in
- Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
- Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
Getting a quote
Some jobs can be priced from pictures, while others need a survey. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.
Advice
Rented and managed buildings
Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, the lease or tenancy agreement normally sets out who maintains what. We are happy to deal with either side and send the records to whoever needs them.
Bigger systems bring extra duties: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We can arrange it, prepare the system for it and fix what it finds.
System by system
Hot water cylinders
Cylinder size is based on your household’s needs.
Air-to-air heat pumps
An air-to-air system heats rooms directly and can also provide cooling. They don’t heat hot water so you’ll need another way to heat it.

FAQs for Gilston
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Gilston?
Gilston is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.
Will a heat pump in Gilston need planning permission?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Around 16 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Gilston. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the planning department at Harlow council, usually the authority for Gilston.
Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?
It varies from room to room. We check them all during the survey and the quote shows what’s needed.
Do you work on systems someone else installed?
Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine from all the leading brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the job needs and how to do it, and the quote is based on that.
How long will it take to install a heat pump?
Expect it to take from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The cylinder, the radiators and the pipework make the biggest difference, and we confirm the timing with your quote.
Which type of heat pump is right for my home?
It depends on your home, your heating and whether you want cooling. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions, and we set out the options after the survey.
What a heat pump looks like in Gilston
Valuation Office Agency council tax records date about 65% of homes in the Gilston area to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and the 2021 Census found about 46% of households in terraced houses. Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. Shared walls keep a terrace’s heat loss down, while gardens next door make the noise check on the outdoor unit important.
Homeowners near Harlow Town station often ask whether a heat pump can take over from the boiler, and the heat loss survey answers that. If your home is listed, like Much Hadham Palace about 4.8 miles north, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.

Aftercare tips
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Keep the outdoor unit clear all year
- Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover
- File the MCS certificate safely
We show you how to use the controls and explain how a heat pump works differently from a boiler. Steady running suits a heat pump better than switching on and off so we set the controls up with you.
Have the system serviced regularly. Your manufacturer’s warranty terms may say something about servicing.
From one of our customers
“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
