Advice
How we handle air source heat pumps in Furze Platt
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home with electricity running the compressor and fans. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way and the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. Typical jobs include replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and questions about where the outdoor unit can go, on homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, radiator systems and air-to-water heat pumps.
Homes around Furze Platt typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder, so the main questions are heat loss, radiators and the electrics.
Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. Where yours does, a regular service with us keeps that side in order and each visit is recorded.

What a heat pump looks like in Furze Platt
The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures date about 40% of homes in and around Furze Platt to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and Census 2021 figures found about 65% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Peter? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Historic houses such as Cliveden, about 2.6 miles north-east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

How we price air source heat pumps
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:
- Whether we need access equipment for high-level work
- The condition of any existing system
- Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
A single unit or a whole estate, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and what it needs. You will have a fixed price before we start, with VAT shown clearly.
Helping us quote
Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:
- A few pictures of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
- Your consumer unit or fuse board
- Any error code or flashing light on the display
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. Then you get a fixed price before any work starts.
Furze Platt questions
Will you come out to Furze Platt?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Will a heat pump in Furze Platt need planning permission?
It depends on the property. Central Furze Platt sits inside a conservation area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where necessary, we check with the local planning authority (for Furze Platt, normally Windsor and Maidenhead council).
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
Possibly. In England and Wales it pays £7,500 for an eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump, and £2,500 for air-to-air under tighter rules. Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump until March 2027. We check your home against the rules at the survey.
What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?
For homes, currently none: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. Businesses and hotels pay the standard rate, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Each visit is written up, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. That is not optional: it’s required by law, and we hold it.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
How the job changes from property to property
Hot water cylinders
The cylinder size depends on how much hot water the household uses.
Radiators and underfloor heating
If radiators need upsizing, the quote lists them, so you know the full scope.
What a customer said
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
