About our air source heat pumps in East Lavant
An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler which means some radiators may need upsizing. The survey shows which rooms are fine and which need changes, and the quote sets it out. We’re often asked to deal with questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life, on hot water cylinders, underfloor heating and radiator systems.
If your home in or near East Lavant is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.
Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. File them with the system’s paperwork, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

What the work involves, system by system
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales: £7,500 for air-to-water and ground source, and £2,500 for air-to-air in limited cases. The installer applies.

An older cylinder may not suit a heat pump, and we explain whether yours can stay.

Questions from East Lavant
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in East Lavant?
East Lavant is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.
Is a heat pump in East Lavant permitted development?
It depends on the property. The Mid and East Lavant Conservation Area takes in the middle of East Lavant. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights do not reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the planning department at Chichester council, normally the authority for East Lavant.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
Check the manufacturer’s terms. Some warranty terms require the system to be serviced regularly by a qualified engineer, so check the terms or ask us. Either way, keep a record of every service.
How soon will you get back to me?
The same working day. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, typically whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
What accreditations do you have?
We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Every job is looked at first, either on a site survey or from photos and details for simple jobs. Then you get a fixed-price quote.
What owners can safely do
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo of the display helps even more.
Leave it or put it right?
Planning rules have specific conditions. Checking the position for your home at the survey stage avoids surprises later, including conservation areas, listed buildings and Article 4 directions. An early booking makes the visit to East Lavant easier to arrange.
Putting several jobs into one visit often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

What happens on the day
Everything the job needs comes with us, from tools and test equipment to ladders and dust sheets. All we ask is clear access to the units, or to where they’ll go, and to the consumer unit. On site, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. A few pictures help us make the most of a visit to East Lavant.
- First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
- The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
- You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
- The system is installed and connected to the controls.
- The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.
How to prepare
- Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
- Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in
- Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board

About 71% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
