Air source heat pumps in Codicote

About our air source heat pumps in Codicote

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We check the rules for your property as part of the survey. If the problem is choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air and plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump, we can sort it out.

Older homes around Codicote can be draughty or have solid walls, so a proper heat loss calculation matters. Sometimes insulation first is the better investment.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details and F-Gas records for a new system, a note of the fault and the fix for a repair, or a service record. Keep it with the system’s paperwork so it’s to hand next time.

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. It takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker, and we clear up before we go. Getting to the outside of the property matters more than parking in a place like Codicote.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Preparing for the visit

  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area

Getting a price

Getting a quote is straightforward. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day. If we need to see the property first, we book a survey at a time that works for you.

Advice

What air conditioning won’t do

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • Any gas work on the existing boiler
  • Tax advice on your own circumstances
  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems

If you’re not sure, just phone us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Where we work

  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Radiator systems
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders

Keeping the system healthy

Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. Our tips:

  • Look at insulation alongside the heat pump
  • Leave space around the outdoor unit
  • Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. You might see steam or hear the unit change note, and that is normal.

Have the system serviced regularly. Check the manufacturer’s terms, as they may include servicing conditions.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Codicote

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Codicote?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Codicote, if they qualify. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and is not an add-on to a boiler. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Is Codicote within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

What’s the price of a heat pump installation?

Expect £8,000–£16,000 for an air-to-water system, with 0% VAT on homes, before the grant is taken off. The heat pump size, radiator changes and the cylinder decide where in that range you are, and air-to-air systems are priced after a survey.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

Which type of heat pump is right for my home?

Air-to-water feeds your central heating and hot water, while air-to-air warms and cools rooms directly. Air-to-air doesn’t heat hot water and the survey helps decide.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

The work takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. The survey lets us set a firm programme, so ring 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk to arrange one.

Is a heat pump permitted development?

Under the Planning Portal rules, a heat pump on a house can often be permitted development. Listed buildings and their curtilages are excluded, and listed building consent is a separate matter. We check what applies to you.

When to call us in Codicote

Many enquiries start with a question about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Whether you can get the grant depends on your home and the scheme conditions, so we check before you commit.

The things we’re asked about most are:

  • Checking eligibility for a heat pump grant
  • Planning and permitted development questions
  • Finding a place for the outdoor unit

With Shaw's Corner about 1.7 miles south-west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether they looked at the job before pricing it
  • Who does the electrical work, and whether they can certify it
  • What’s in the price and what isn’t

Heat pumps in Codicote: local notes

About 64% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. The centre of Codicote lies within the Codicote Conservation Area. On the National Heritage List, around 38 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Codicote; Parish Church of St Giles (grade II*) is one. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with the planning team at North Hertfordshire council, which typically handles Codicote.

Period properties close to Parish Church of St Giles can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.
