Air source heat pumps in Chipping: the local picture

Valuation Office Agency council tax records show about 35% of homes in and around Chipping were built in 2000 or later, and about 69% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Better insulated, newer homes are often a good match for a heat pump. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

The installer applies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and we are MCS certified. Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

About our air source heat pumps in Chipping

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than most boilers which means some radiators may need upsizing. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss and anything that needs changing is in the quote. If you are dealing with checking emitters for a heat pump and ageing boilers that will need replacing, we can help.

For a home around Chipping that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

Common questions in Chipping

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Chipping?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The half-mile around the middle of Chipping holds about 6 listed buildings and structures. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where needed, we check with the planning department at East Hertfordshire council, normally the authority for Chipping.

Is Chipping within the area you cover?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

£8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) for air-to-water, before the grant. The final price depends on the heat loss survey, the radiators and the cylinder, and you get a fixed-price quote.

What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?

For homes, currently none: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. The relief isn’t available to businesses, and with air-to-air we confirm the VAT on the quote. This is general information, not tax advice.

Is there a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

Yes, but only where it becomes the home’s main heating. The £2,500 applies when it replaces the fossil-fuel heating, covers the full heating demand, is fitted by an MCS certified installer and serves a home. Fitted alongside a boiler, it will not qualify.

Looking after your system

To keep the system working properly:

  • Keep radiators clear
  • Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
  • Keep to regular servicing

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes, and that’s normal.

Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off, using the settings agreed at handover.

How the visit works

Protection comes first: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby and nothing is moved without asking you. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes, and we tidy up before we leave. Work in Chipping is booked in advance at a time that suits you.

  1. We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time

Outdoor unit position and planning

Flats and blocks of flats have different limits, and Article 4 directions can remove rights. Listed building consent is a separate matter and we check what applies to you.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales: £7,500 for air-to-water (and ground source), and £2,500 for air-to-air with strict conditions. The installer applies.

What affects the quote in Chipping

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
  • The number of rooms, units or zones
  • The brand, model and parts involved

Several rooms, units or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Mention every unit or room you need covered and we will price it together.

Helping us quote

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • Your consumer unit or fuse board
  • The make and model of the system, from the label
  • Wide photos of the room or the existing unit

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it on the quote. To get one, call us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.

From one of our customers

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
