Air source heat pumps for Aspenden

How we handle air source heat pumps in Aspenden

Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it does not apply to businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. The work covers radiator systems, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-air heat pumps, and the jobs we see most are not knowing whether a grant applies and no space for a hot water cylinder.

For a home around Aspenden that is off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

Each manufacturer sets its own warranty period. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and its longer extensions apply to its air-to-water units only. For any other brand, we explain the manufacturer’s terms on your quote.

What a heat pump looks like in Aspenden

The middle of Aspenden is part of the Aspenden Conservation Area. In the mile around Aspenden’s centre, 3 conservation areas have been designated. Historic England lists about 12 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Aspenden, including Parish Church of St Mary (church of England) (grade I). That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where necessary, we check with East Hertfordshire council, usually the planning authority here. VOA council tax data show about 35% of homes in and around Aspenden were built in 2000 or later, and about 69% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

Signs you need air source heat pumps in Aspenden

An ageing boiler is often the moment people start thinking about a heat pump. Starting early leaves time for the survey, the design and any grant application, rather than rushing a replacement in winter.

It’s time to call us if you’re dealing with:

  • Questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
  • Working out whether radiators need upsizing
  • A boiler that’s getting old

Period properties close to Parish Church of St Mary can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

How to choose an air conditioning engineer

Aspenden: your questions answered

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Aspenden?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Aspenden, if they qualify. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Do you cover smaller places like Aspenden?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We’re an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We will work out which band applies to yours.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while bigger systems and repairs that need testing get a visit.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of the warranty, so it’s worth checking. Keep every service record either way.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. That is not optional: it’s required by law, and AirCon Doctor is certified.

What air source heat pumps can’t fix

Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:

  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council
  • Promising eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Parts of the system we cover

  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Radiator systems

How it works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. The work itself takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We plan the trip to Aspenden around you.

  1. You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. We install the heat pump and connect it up.
  5. After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know where the consumer unit is
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working

Advice

Owner checks or an engineer?

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

What a customer said

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
