Different systems, different jobs

Air-to-water heat pumps

An air-to-water heat pump heats water for your radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water cylinder. It takes over from the boiler, and is MCS certified when we install it.

VAT on heat pumps

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%, under HMRC Notice 708/6. Businesses pay the standard rate.

Air source heat pumps in Ashridge, done properly

In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. If the problem is checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and checking whether planning permission is needed, we can sort it out.

For a home around Ashridge that is off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump.

Looking after a system is mostly common sense: keep the outdoor unit clear, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on cleaning and book a service at the interval they recommend. That also helps where the warranty terms ask for regular servicing.

Air source heat pumps in Ashridge: the local picture

On the National Heritage List, around 20 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Ashridge; The Manor House and No 55 (grade II*) is one. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with Dacorum council, usually the planning authority here. About 72% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler. The installer applies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and we are MCS certified.

Keeping the system healthy

Aftercare is straightforward, and it helps at the next service:

  • Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often
  • Know the servicing conditions in your warranty
  • Keep radiators clear

We show you how to use the controls and explain how a heat pump works differently from a boiler. Heat pumps tend to work best running steadily rather than in short bursts, and we’ll explain the settings for your home.

Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and stored items. It needs good airflow to collect heat from outside so keep it unobstructed.

Ashridge: your questions answered

Is Ashridge within the area you cover?

Yes. Ashridge is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Is the heat pump grant available in Ashridge?

Ashridge is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, usually whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?

Air-to-water work is in the £8,000–£16,000 range (0% VAT on homes), with any grant still to come off. Where you land depends on the size of heat pump, any radiators that need changing and the hot water cylinder. Air-to-air is priced after a survey.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. Every visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine from all the leading brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.

What accreditations do you have?

F-Gas company certification, NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps, plus Checkatrade membership. Our engineers also hold the individual F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

The process

Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. All told, the work takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. A note on how to find the property and where to park makes a visit to Ashridge easier.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you’re hoping for.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you are eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records

Getting a quote

Published ranges are a starting point; the quote is built on your property, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. Once we have looked at the job, from pictures or on a survey, you get a fixed price. To get going, phone 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

Advice

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

We work for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as homeowners and businesses. Let us know who will give us access and who the records should go to, and we will keep everyone informed.

Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, the lease or tenancy agreement normally sets out who maintains what. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the records to whoever needs them.

What a customer said
