Air conditioning in South Street
We fit wall-mounted splits, multi-split systems, ducted systems and ceiling cassettes, plus VRF systems for bigger commercial buildings. Which one suits you depends on the space, the building and how much of the unit you want to see, and we explain the options on the survey. Whether you call it air con, air conditioning or an air-to-air heat pump, it’s the job we do every week across East Sussex.
The electrics are part of the job: a dedicated circuit where the unit needs one, certified under NICEIC, so the electrical paperwork comes with the installation.
For a home in or near South Street, an air-to-air system can cool in summer and heat in the cooler months, which suits rooms the main heating doesn’t reach well, such as a garden room or loft.
Aftercare is simple, and most of it is in the manual: keep the outdoor unit clear, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on cleaning and book a service at the interval they recommend. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

What happens on the day
The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. On site, it takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer. Photos of the existing unit help with repairs and servicing in South Street.
- You send pictures, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
- The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
- We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
- Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
- We commission, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas and warranty paperwork.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
- Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in

Common questions in South Street
Is planning permission needed for air conditioning in South Street?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Around 3 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central South Street. Since 2025, an air-to-air heat pump on a house can count as permitted development if it meets the conditions and is not used only for cooling. Listed buildings still need consent, and in a conservation area a road-facing wall or roof is not allowed under those rules. If there’s any doubt, we ask the planning department at Lewes council, usually the authority for South Street.
Is South Street within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
Do I need a new electrical circuit?
In most cases. We check your consumer unit on the survey and include any electrical work on the quote and we install and certify the circuit as NICEIC approved contractors.
How does the warranty work?
Warranty is the manufacturer’s own, on its terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.
Which type of air conditioning is best?
Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.
Is air conditioning possible in a flat?
In many cases, but permissions come first. You’ll usually need the landlord’s or management company’s consent for the outdoor unit and the pipe route, so check the lease. Permitted development rules for flats are also tighter than for houses, and we flag anything that may need permission. This is general information, not legal advice.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
Before you call an engineer
Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you can’t see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.
Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

What an install looks like in South Street
About 80% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Houses typically have a side or rear wall with room for the outdoor unit, and a multi-split can serve several rooms from one outdoor unit.
A loft bedroom or a glazed extension is often the room that prompts the first call. If your home is in one of the older streets near The Parish Church of St Peter, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install.

Honest limits
We’d rather tell you now than sell you work that will not help, so here are the limits:
- A room that can’t take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
- A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)
- Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)
Not sure which it is? You can call us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Keeping the system healthy
Once we have finished, these simple steps help:
- Let filters dry fully before you put them back
- Keep the handover documents somewhere safe
- Shut doors and windows when it’s on
We recommend an annual service, and some manufacturers make regular servicing a condition of their warranty. We can remind you when it’s due if you’d like.
Set it and leave it. A moderate set temperature cools the room just as well as the lowest one, without the waste and keep doors and windows shut while it runs.
What a customer said
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
