Need air conditioning in Castle Town?

Your questions about air conditioning in Castle Town

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Castle Town?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. There’s a conservation area, the Upper Beeding, Hyde Street Conservation Area, close to central Castle Town. Since 2025, an air-to-air heat pump on a house can count as permitted development if it meets the conditions and is not used only for cooling. Listed buildings still need consent, and in a conservation area a road-facing wall or roof isn’t allowed under those rules. If there’s any doubt, we ask Horsham council, which is normally the planning authority for Castle Town.

Will you come out to Castle Town?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

Where will you put the outdoor unit?

Wall brackets, ground level and flat roofs are all options, wherever the pipe route, airflow and servicing access work best. We also think about noise near bedrooms and neighbours, and the position can affect planning.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Let us know who the records should go to.

Do you work on all makes?

We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

Protection goes down first: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

A single room takes a day in most homes, while multi-split systems for several rooms can take longer.

Homes around Castle Town usually have room outside for an outdoor unit. The questions are more often the age of the walls, the electrics and how far the pipes need to run.

Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we are happy to talk you through them.

After we have gone

Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:

  • Keep the handover documents somewhere safe
  • Never run the system with the filters out
  • Avoid setting it far colder than you need

We show you how to take the filters out and clean them. Clean them every few weeks when the system is in heavy use, or as the manual recommends, and keep space clear around the outdoor unit.

Give the outdoor unit room to breathe. Anything piled against it, from leaves to garden furniture, reduces the airflow, which makes the whole system less efficient.

Leave it or put it right?

Fans and portables move warm air around rather than removing it. A fixed system removes the heat to the outside, runs more quietly in the room and can normally heat as well, so it works for you in winter as well. A system that’s left with a fault, or without a service, normally costs more to run.

Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Why us?

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Air conditioning around Castle Town

The 2021 Census found about 65% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. With homes like that, finding a sensible outdoor unit position is rarely hard, and a multi-split lets two or more rooms run off it.

Homes near St Botolph's Church are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. Portslade Manor (roughly 4.2 miles south-east) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on.

How the visit works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. The work itself takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Castle Town.

  1. We survey the property, or work from your pictures for a simple job.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. Sheets go down first, then the indoor unit and the condenser are mounted.
  4. Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
  5. The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Tell us about parking and loading
  • Clear a path to the units and the space around them

Getting a price

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.
