Air source heat pumps across Willian

How we handle air source heat pumps in Willian

Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. If you are dealing with no space for a hot water cylinder and a boiler that’s getting old, we can help.

For a home around Willian that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.

For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We will tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

Heat pumps in Willian: local notes

About 62% of homes in and around Willian date from 1945 to 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and the last census (2021) found about 39% of households in terraced houses. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Terraced houses share walls with neighbours, which helps, but the outdoor unit position needs care with noise next door.

If your home is one of the older properties near Church of All Saints, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation.

The process

Think of the visit in three stages: look, put right and sign off. First comes a careful look at the system or the space, then we do the work, and finally we test, record and explain. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. If a lane or gateway near Willian is tight for a van, let us know and we will plan for it.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time

Getting a price

Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.

Advice

Willian: your questions answered

Can I fit a heat pump in Willian without planning permission?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The centre of Willian is in the Willian Conservation Area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Willian, normally North Hertfordshire council) first.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Willian?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Willian, if they qualify. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. It’s worth checking before you book and we’ll gladly show you ours.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, 24/7. Call the emergency line and tell us the make, the symptoms and any error code, and we’ll advise on what to do next.

Will you make a mess?

Protection goes down first: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts before we leave.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes. Every job is looked at first, on a survey, or from your photos and details where the job is simple. A fixed-price quote follows.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and explain why.

Why it’s worth doing now in Willian

A heat pump sized without a proper heat loss survey can struggle in cold weather or run inefficiently. A room-by-room survey gets it right first time. Booking before summer means the work in Willian is done before the hot weather.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is looked at first, and the price is agreed before we start.

Why us?

  • We work on all the leading brands
  • Manufacturer’s warranty terms explained on your quote
  • A 24/7 emergency line

Honest limits

Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It doesn’t solve:

  • Tax advice on your own circumstances
  • Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf
  • Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation

If in doubt, phone us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Underfloor heating
  • Radiator systems
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-water heat pumps

Owner checks or an engineer?

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

What a customer said

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
