Air source heat pumps in West End
In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We check the rules for your property as part of the survey. Common call-outs are for deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home and ageing boilers that will need replacing, on homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, air-to-air heat pumps and hot water cylinders.
If your home in or near West End is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.
Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. File them with the system’s paperwork, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

What affects the quote in West End
Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:
- The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
- Whether it’s a one-off job or part of a maintenance contract
- How far the pipework has to run, and where
Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.
Before you get in touch
There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:
- Any previous service or F-Gas records
- The make and model of the system, from the label
- Any error code or flashing light on the display
For a fixed-price quote, ring us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and tell us about the property and what you need. A few pictures make it quicker. You’ll hear back from us the same working day.

Questions from West End
Can I fit a heat pump in West End without planning permission?
There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The half-mile around the middle of West End holds about 3 listed buildings and structures. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Welwyn Hatfield council, usually the authority for West End first.
Is West End within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
Eligibility depends on the property and the scheme rules. In England and Wales, the scheme offers £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump, and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump only in limited cases. We check before you commit.
Do you work on all makes?
The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
What’s the price of a heat pump installation?
For air-to-water, the price is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) before any grant. Eligible homes in England and Wales can get £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme though not every home qualifies.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes, 24/7. When you call, tell us the make, what’s happening and any error code, and we’ll talk you through the next steps.
System by system
Hot water cylinders
The cylinder size depends on how much hot water the household uses.
Air-to-water heat pumps
Flow temperatures are lower than with a typical boiler, so radiator sizes matter.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us
Owners can handle the everyday basics: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.
Write down what you notice: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.
What we do, step by step
The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: look, put right and sign off. First comes a careful look at the system or the space, then we do the work, and finally everything is tested, recorded and explained. The middle part takes longest, which takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to West End.

How to prepare
- Clear a path to the units and the space around them
- Tell us about parking and loading
- Arrange for someone to be there to let us in

Published ranges are a starting point; the quote is built on your property, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by photos or a survey, the price is fixed. To get going, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Advice
From one of our customers
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
