Air source heat pumps in Clifton Reynes, done properly
In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We check the rules for your property as part of the survey. We are often asked to deal with plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and deciding on the outdoor unit position, on underfloor heating, hot water cylinders and air-to-air heat pumps.
Older and listed homes in villages like Clifton Reynes need extra care, and permitted development does not cover listed buildings, so we check consent first.
We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

The process
You don’t need to do much on the day. Just let us in and point us to the units, or to where they’ll be fitted, and the rest is down to us. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. We plan the trip to Clifton Reynes around you.
- First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you’re hoping for.
- We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
- The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

VAT on heat pumps
Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5% following HMRC’s rules on energy-saving materials. It doesn’t apply to businesses.
Heat loss surveys
We look at walls, windows, floors, roofs and ventilation along with the room sizes.
Common questions in Clifton Reynes
Is Clifton Reynes within the area you cover?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day.
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Clifton Reynes?
Clifton Reynes is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Which brands do you work with?
We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.
Why use an F-Gas certified company?
F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and AirCon Doctor is certified.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
That depends on the brand. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim and we will tell you what your brand asks for.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns that can’t wait. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
Looking after it afterwards
Looking after the system is mostly common sense. A few tips:
- Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing
- Keep to regular servicing
- Keep radiators clear
In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes and it’s part of how the system works.
Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off as explained at handover.
How we price air source heat pumps
Typical ranges are on our prices page, and your quote is built on your job. What we look at:
- Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
- The equipment or parts the job needs
- The condition of any existing system
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we look at the job first, from pictures or on a survey, and why the quote is fixed before we start.
Before you get in touch
Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:
- Any error code or flashing light on the display
- A few pictures of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
- The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Tell us the address and what you need, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
What a heat pump looks like in Clifton Reynes
Census 2021 figures found about 69% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. Roughly a third of a mile or less from central Clifton Reynes, you reach the Clifton Reynes Conservation Area. On the National Heritage List, around 5 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Clifton Reynes; Parish Church of St Mary (grade I) is one. For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the planning team at Milton Keynes council, which normally handles Clifton Reynes where necessary.
Older homes near Parish Church of St Mary may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Turvey Abbey, roughly 2.7 miles east, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings.
