Most “best air conditioner” lists rank units by brand reputation. We think that’s the wrong way round. A well-sized, well-installed mid-range unit will outperform a premium one that’s the wrong size or in the wrong place. So this guide starts with what you need, then names the wall-mounted models we’d short-list, using only the manufacturers’ own published figures.
Everything here is a fixed split system, the type we install. Portable units are a different product with very different performance; see /air-conditioning-vs-portable-air-conditioner/.
What makes a good home air conditioner
- Right size. Too small and it struggles in a heatwave; too large and it cycles on and off. See /how-to-choose-right-size-air-conditioning-unit/.
- Quiet indoor unit. For bedrooms, look for around 19 to 20 dB(A) on the quietest setting.
- Efficiency for how you’ll use it. SEER matters for cooling; SCOP matters if you’ll heat with it.
- Refrigerant. New single splits use R32 or lower-GWP refrigerants.
- Warranty and servicing terms you can actually meet.
Best for efficiency on paper
Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-RZ. Mitsubishi Electric publishes SEER up to 11.7 and SCOP up to 5.3 (A+++) for this R290 unit, with 19 dB(A) indoors (MSZ-RZ page). It comes in 2.5 and 3.5 kW sizes.
Panasonic Etherea 2.5 or 3.5 kW. SEER 9.50 and SCOP 5.20, A+++ for both, with 19 dB(A) on quiet and built-in Wi-Fi (Panasonic Etherea).
Fujitsu/GENERAL Designer Series. The 2.5 kW ASEH09KJCAL lists SEER 9.20 and SCOP 5.10, A+++ for both, and 19 dB(A) on quiet (data page).
Best for bedrooms
Many current units quote 19 dB(A) on their quietest setting, so the decider is often the outdoor unit position and how the unit sounds at the fan speed you’ll actually use. Good short-list options:
- Toshiba Haori: quoted at less than 19 dB(A) indoors, with an outdoor unit down to 39 dB(A) (Toshiba Haori).
- Daikin Perfera: 19 dB(A), with a motion sensor that directs air away from people (Daikin Perfera).
- Toshiba Seiya: 19 dB(A) in silent mode at a lower price (Toshiba Seiya).
Our /air-conditioning-bedrooms-guide-2026/ and /air-conditioning-noise-levels-guide/ go further.
Best design
- Daikin Emura: curved design in black, silver or white, up to A+++, 19 dB(A) (Daikin Emura).
- Toshiba Haori: a changeable textile front, A+++ for cooling and heating.
- LG ARTCOOL Gallery: the front frames a photo or artwork (LG ARTCOOL Gallery).
- Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-LN: red, natural white, pearl white or black, with built-in Wi-Fi (MSZ-LN).
- Toshiba Shorai Curve: matt black or white, A+++ in both modes (Shorai Curve).

Best for small rooms and tight budgets
- Panasonic TZ: compact, A++ for cooling and heating (SEER 7.30, SCOP 4.60), 20 dB(A), built-in Wi-Fi (Panasonic TZ).
- Daikin Sensira: compact enough for above a door, 20 dB(A) (Daikin Sensira).
- Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-HR Classic: which the manufacturer says costs about 20% less than the equivalent MSZ-AP (M Series range).
- LG DUALCOOL Standard Plus: A++ cooling (SEER 7.0) with ThinQ Wi-Fi (LG PC09SQ).
These are cooling-first choices. Several drop to A+ for heating, which is fine for summer rooms but less so for year-round heating.
Best for winter heating
If you want air-to-air heating through the winter, put SCOP first:
- Toshiba Daiseikai 10: A+++, with performance stated down to −30°C (Toshiba Daiseikai 10).
- Panasonic Etherea 2.5 or 3.5 kW: SCOP 5.20, heating down to −20°C.
- Fujitsu/GENERAL Designer Series: SCOP 5.10, heating operation down to −20°C.
Replacing fossil-fuel heating completely may qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in England and Wales, with strict conditions. See /boiler-upgrade-scheme-air-to-air-heat-pump-grant/.
Refrigerant and future-proofing
Most current wall units use R32. The Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-RZ is an exception: it uses R290 with a GWP the company gives as 0.02. Since 2025, new single splits holding less than 3 kg can’t use F gases with a GWP above 750 (GOV.UK), so any new unit you’re offered should meet that. Built-in Wi-Fi is worth having too: it makes schedules, fault alerts and remote control simple. See /r32-vs-r410a-refrigerant-guide/ and /smart-air-conditioning-apps-home-automation/.

What we’d check before recommending one
At a site survey we measure the room, look at glazing and sun, find a sensible outdoor position and pipe route, check your electrics and ask how you’ll use the system. Then we recommend two or three suitable units with a fixed-price quote. A single room split costs £1,200 to £2,200 + VAT with us, including supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation. See /prices/ and /air-conditioning-site-survey-what-happens/.
Quick answers
What is the best air conditioning unit for a UK home?
It depends on the room. For efficiency, look at the Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-RZ, Panasonic Etherea or Fujitsu/GENERAL Designer Series. For bedrooms, the Toshiba Haori, Daikin Perfera and Toshiba Seiya all quote 19 dB(A) or lower.
What is the quietest air conditioner for a bedroom?
Several units quote 19 dB(A) on their quietest setting, and Toshiba quotes less than 19 dB(A) for the Haori. The outdoor unit position and the fan speed you use matter as much as the headline figure.
Which air conditioner is best for heating in winter?
Choose a high SCOP. The Panasonic Etherea 2.5 and 3.5 kW list SCOP 5.20, the Fujitsu/GENERAL Designer 2.5 kW lists 5.10, and Toshiba states the Daiseikai 10 works down to −30°C.
Is a more expensive air conditioner worth it?
It can be if you’ll run it a lot, especially for heating, or if noise and design matter. For a room used on a few hot days a year, a well-sized mid-range unit is usually the better buy.
