Crawley Borough Council describes the town as 14 neighbourhoods, the newest being Forge Wood in the north east. Most homes were built in the last seventy years or so, and the borough has a large business district at Manor Royal. That makes Crawley a fairly predictable place to fit air conditioning, but there are still things that push a price up or down.
Crawley installation prices

New homes in Forge Wood
The council’s Forge Wood page says the neighbourhood is planned to contain up to 1,900 homes once complete. Newer homes tend to have cavity walls, regular rooms and modern consumer units, so jobs often sit lower in the band. Two checks come first: whether the estate has covenants about outside equipment, and whether your new-home warranty says anything about drilling outside walls. Our new-build guide covers both.
Older neighbourhood houses
In the earlier neighbourhoods, terraces and semi-detached houses are common. The things that move the price here are practical: whether there is a clear spot at the back for the outdoor unit, how far the pipework must travel to an upstairs bedroom, and whether the consumer unit has room for a new circuit. A bedroom at the front of a terrace with no side access may need a longer route over or through the house.

Manor Royal and business premises
Manor Royal is Crawley’s main business district, with a Business Improvement District that the council supports. Offices, trade counters, workshops and server rooms each need a different approach: cassette units in suspended ceilings, ducted systems, or dedicated cooling for comms rooms. Servicing and repairs
Once a system is in, a yearly service keeps it efficient and keeps the F-Gas records up to date. Ours costs £95–£150 + VAT per system and covers cleaning, checks and a written record. Planning in Crawley
Crawley Borough Council has 13 conservation areas, including High Street, Ifield Village, St Peters, Brighton Road and Worth. If your home is in one, the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road under permitted development. Listed buildings need separate consent.
Elsewhere, the national rules on the Planning Portal apply: you won’t need to apply for a heat pump on a house where the outdoor unit stays within 1.5 m³, it passes MCS 020(a), it does more than cool and it’s sited within the rules. Air-to-air heat pumps are included since 2025. Flats have tighter limits, and cooling-only units need a check with the council.
Grants and VAT
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump, or £7,500 towards air-to-water, when it replaces fossil-fuel heating and meets the home’s full heating demand. It can’t be added alongside a boiler. We are MCS certified and make the claim.
